can someone get totally drunk, so wasted that he/she cant remember anything?

there's so many criminals who swear that they dont know what they were doing, too drunk too actually remember anything. i've never been that drunk, but then again im not a good example as im not fond of drinking alcohol.
my friends tell me that its not possible not to remember anything; they said that you know what you were doing but because of the alcohol, just dont care. but some do swear that they cant remember anything, so i often wonder if they are telling the truth.

although i haven't had any experiences of getting too drunk, i don't think it's possible that a person would not be able to remember things because he had too much to drink. i believe that a person is still conscious with what he doing. so i think he would still have some memory of what had happened when he was drunk.
