David Beckham coming to America to play with the Los Angeles Galaxy!

United States

I just saw the blurb on Sportscenter. David Beckham, one of the world's most famous soccer/football stars, is going to play in America now. What are your thoughts? Will this give the movement to popularize soccer in America a big shot in the arm? I hope so, because I, despite being a white American guy, love soccer, and I watch the European soccer league whenever I get the chance, which, unfortunately, is not all that often.

You are privilaged to have David coming to the US. He is a great ambassador for the sport. The major downside for me is that by playing in the 'States he is really giving up the opportunity to ever play for England again. (he retired from the captaincy last year but seemingly deliberately did not retire from international football). He is a tremedous talent, but more than that he has great heart which is key for any sportsman. He will be an inspiration to his team mates and is able to perform when most people would let nerves get the better of them. There was the qualification for the European Cup (I think) where we should have been ahead against Greece.. In the last minute there was a free kick awarded within 'Beckham range'. He took the kick which turned out to be the very last stroke of the game - think about this pressure, a nation held it's breath.... qualifying for the European Cup hung on this one strike of the ball. Millions of English supporters squirmed in their seats - what does Beckham do? the seemingly impossible, slots it into the net as cool as a cucumber, one of his classic 'bend it like Beckham' strikes. Everyone knows he can do it...they know what he can do...they just coudn't stop him doing it. To be fair, this is the spectacular part of his game, the majority of his work is his boundless energy and ability to put the ball exactly where it needs to go for the perfect cross. He is still the best crosser of the ball from the right-hand side that the world has ever seen. plenty of footballers can now bend a spot-kick like Beckham, precious few can hit a ball on the move like he can. Make no mistake, I am sure he is coming to play football, not to hang up his boots. Enjoy it!

Becks has probably made a gud muv. Now, he's freed of d conflicts he's wid d madrid club. Secondly, he can play gud football & coach d americans as well. And lastly, he can muv 2 HOLLYWOOD which I feel is d coz of his transfer. Now the BECKHAM couple, DAVID and VICTORIA can both walk on d American ramp 2gether.

David Becham will certainally give the movement to popularize soccer in America. David Becham is one most famous soccer personality that bring the peaple to the stadia. David Beham's persence in American leage will bring more prefessionalism.

I do not think it will do much for the popularity of soccer here in America. Pele coming over to play for the New York Cosmos didn't help much. Also Beckham is no longer in his prime, hows to say he will wow the crowd with whatever he is still able to do?

David Beckham's move to LA Galaxy is great publicity for he really wants to be.....a movie star. I read a comment on that in the local papers here in Portugal with a Madrid dateline. I feel that soccer will not go anywhere even with the big stars that have played there beginning with Pelé and the Cosmos. It is really sad that the US is not more prominent in the sport. It seems to be based on the fact that most Americans feel that it is a sport for sissies. They ignorantly compare it to American Football. I did that for many years even though I lived in countries where soccer was the Nº 1 sport. It wasn't until I got to Portugal that I began to study the game and finally came to the conclusion that soccer is far more demanding that American Football will ever hope to be. Until such time as American Colleges and Universities start giving more athletic scholarships to the American Youth it won't go far as fast as it should. There are many young people who are not physically adapted to the major sports in the US. Soccer has the advantage that height and weight is not as important as talent and ability. I feel that the US has a wealth of talent that has not been tapped but they are more intent on getting the scholarships which leads to the professional leagues. We Americans always like to be the best. But unless more interest and investment is made to our youth it may well be one or two more generations for that "dream" is fulfilled.

Yes it will help to make football more popular in america but he really has ended his hopes of ever playing for the english national team again as the people will see it as 2 easy for him as the american league is were the big national players normally go 2 play there last couple of seasons once they retire from international football.

im english so david beckham is like our god over here lol. to be honest i think he's only made the move after victoria's nagged him so she can hang out with her hollywood pals and try kick start her career. i think it will popularize soccer in america though but not enough as he still is really only there because he got rejected by england and spain!

This won't popularize soccer any more in america in my opinion. I am a lvoer of soccer, and especially the LA Galaxy who got him. My favorite player in Landon Donovan. But anyways it's been done before by many many players. It didn't help then and I dought it will now. The fact that soccer is right during baseball season doesn't help it much. It isn't thought to be a very hard sport, and little contact is involved. I play soccer and know this is fault but that's what all my friends give me beef about and i'm sure alot of the USA believes that too. I hope it expands the MLS but i doubt it.
