does that number next to your name go up when you start discussions because mine doesnt

No, I mean I am new to this thing also but I asked that same question and was told no it only goes up when you responed. But for some reason that is not happening for me today. Go figure. If anyone can explain it to me also that would be great.

That's weird, when you respond, the number should increase. If it still continues to be like that, try contacting mylot and ask them to check it for you.

only when a person responds to your discussion or when you respond to someone elses discussion
