Do you think Alcoholasim is a disease?

I have a friend who is completely different when he is sober but is unberable when intoxicated, we have tried everything from meds to AA Meetings, prayers and even abandoning him, it only gets worse.. how do we get this to end.. if you have dealt with this please tell us how you did it.
