When is the colour of a person going influence my judgement!!!

January 11, 2007 11:01pm CST
I am sick of people saying "We cannot have a black leader"Why???? I will support anyone who holds the same beliefs as me no matter what their culture, race etc. Why are we so jugdemental. If this person can represent me for what I believe I don't care what their heritage is, just do a decent job!! Who puts people on such a high pedestal that they can only believe that someone can represent them when they have the same colour skin as them Please!!! We have to unite, and stop being the victims the government wants us to be. The only way to empower ourselves is to rise above these stereotypical views and fight for what we believe in. What do you believe????

I believe it takes an idiot to think that way. But let's go by this mentality for a second, last time I checked, Bush is a white male! Nuff said. I agree with you, I don't care if the next president is green, if he/she can fix the mess we(US) is in, that's a president for me! As for these primitive stereotypical people, this breed is slowly dying out. I see a lot less of them than I did as a child. I have hopes by the time my children are grown, they will be extinct. I think the US will be a much better place when this happens.

Amen sister...lol I couldn't have said it better myself. I don't think we'll see it in our time..but I still have hopes for this country. And what kind of role model is Bush, oh my God. I am so glad I don't have children. When Bush was running for president. I was the manager in a group home. Well since these woman were all encouraged to vote. Keeping in mind while reading this.. out of the 4 women the highest functioning age was 6. I was supposed to educate them before they voted. I couldn't do it ..they all thought Bush was handsome and recognized his father in pictures. etc. I wanted to tell them all NO you cannot vote for Bush. You can vote for anyone else..lol I had the company send in someone to go over it with them.. End result..the only candidate they wanted was Bush because one of the woman thought he was cute.... lol I have no idea why these people are encouraged to vote.. I mean this in the kindest way. But what does it do to the count...Kind of getting off topic now but I do not like Bush. sorry

I believe in equal opportunity. No matter if he/she is black or white. but if they hold the value to be the leader as well as having the same objectives, then there should be no problem at all. that is according to my view.

Who cares who is the best person for the job thats what matters. What I am sick of is when somebody is talking about somebody else and they say you know the white guy or the black guy....there are millions of each I don't understand why they cannot not use a person's name then we would know exactly who they are talking about. I don't think discrimination will ever go away we are all different and that what fuels it ..difference...People just need to learn to respect each other and not they way they sing about it in rape songs.

I think a lot of this comes from our heritage. Previous generations lived in a different world, where black people and coloured people did not have the opportunities given to Western society. Coloured people were largely uneducated, and this bias was passed on to the following generations. (Don't forget is wasn't all that long ago that black people were considered only as slaves and were forbidden association with whites on a social level) Of course, all this was WRONG. I am not defending their actions or their beliefs, but this was passed on to succeeding generations. We now live in a much smaller world, thanks to increased technology. We also live in a multi-cultural society where coloured people have equal opportunities. Why can't people of a different race or colour achieve as much as or more than a white person? No reason at all! Every person should have equal opportunities for equal qualifications. If a black person is as capable or more capable than a white person, then I see no problem. The only time I see a problem is in reverse racism, where a coloured person is favoured over a white simply on the basis of race. That is just as wrong as racism.

No, I am not saying it is a matter of class NOW, but I think this was the case generations ago, and maybe with a lot of people today, simply because of the way they have perceived things from their parents and grandparents. I believe the majority of people today accept people of any race equally, in any situation, be it politics, business, or entertainment. Young people hold Denzel Washington and others in higher esteeem than Tom Cruise. We are seeing a change in racial prejudice and that is a good thing.
13 Jan 07
I hope we do, but as I still live in quite a class divided country, alot of us are not represented because of this. Thanks for your thoughts.
13 Jan 07
Do you think it has alot to do with class then. The rich will always keep the poor down. I don't understand your statement on black people being uneducated. Many previous generations of black people were educated in their own countries. Are you talking about those who were sold into slavery? I feel alot of it has to do with class. I see Bush and Blair as white men but that is where the similarity ends. These men do not represent me, as I am from a different class to them. I agree that positive discrimination does not work either and I feel it is a complete insult and patronising. Thanks for your comments.

I am a firm believer in people. I don't care what they look like. Cut me, you, or anyone and they bleed the same blood. If you can tell me and show me how to live a better life without hurting others I will be a follower whatever your colour or belief system is. I am a good person and I know lots of others that are but I can't understand how they can say the things they say about others that look different than they do. Man if everyone looked like me it'd be a sorry looking site for sure. Now if everyone thought like me we would have a great world. People are people until they become something else and then the hate starts.

Thanks for your thoughtful words. Your final statement is so true.

There are too many people in this country with prejudices against black leaders. All we hear in the news after they get elected is how much trouble they're in. Not that white politicians are saints by any means but... If you ask a white person to name a black leader who will they name? Marion Barry Jesse Jackson Kofi Anon Idi Amin Cynthia McKinney Condoliza Rice is just considered one of Bush's yes men. The only counter example I can think of that the white people I know respect and trust is Colin Powell. He went against Bush and stuck by his principles. I feel that he is a good man.

I kind of have to agree with you. I do not care about skin color or nationality. It is too bad that most politicians are from the same mold...useless. I am white and would vote for Rice over Clinton. I would also not think twice about voting for Colin Powell. He seems like a no-nosense kind of guy.

I think most of us are in agreement here. I don't believe that race (or gender) should matter one bit. It's how well they represent what the people of the country want that matters. That's all.

What i believe is that we are still living in a world where there are much prejudices and ignorant people. If black people are saying this then they are foolish because they must not like their parents because there parents are black and if white people are saying this than they should remember this the next time they enter the tanning salon. This is all based on fear. We people have to wake up.
13 Jan 07
I don't agree with your comment about not liking your parents. Many black people are under-represented when they look at the majority of men and women who represent them in government. Thanks for your response.

Its a modren form of xtrimism thats the xtrimism about race, I too agree with you as far as some body (regardless of anything) is doing well for you, why not you vote him and make him your leader so that he will think that these ppl elected me even I was black, so I will work better than before for them

For so many years all this world has known is prejudice. It you look around there are just as many intelligent blacks as there are whites. Blacks just have that stigmatism that will always stand that they cannot be more superior to white people whether they have the same or greater standards. I don't believe this country will ever allow a black to be president they will find some way to still the race!

In a democratic society the outcome is in the hands of the people. I am not sure how the electoral system works in America, as it seems extremely complicated to Aussies, but surely if a black man receives the votes, nothing could stop the process?

I feel that anyone could do a good job as a leader, provided they possess the proper skills. However, while I may want to vote for a black leader, I would hesitate. Here, in the US, there are many white supremacist groups and racists. While I might vote for a black leader if I felt that they were the most qualified candidate, it would be in the back of my mind that I was endangering that person's life. Assassinations have been carried out before.........I think a black leader would be at an incredibly high risk of being assassinated. I wish it weren't that way, but it is.

This is one of the things my friend was saying. She mentioned about Martin Luther King and JFK. Although this was years ago, she still feels that this would still happen today. I do hope it is not true. Thanks for your response!!

I always believe than people are judge by their action and not on their looks. discrimination isn't really my thing. our race is being discriminated globally. not only our skin color but also some other appearance. I do think that this is unfair. ignorant always do this.
13 Jan 07
You are right. It is about ignorance. Thanks for your response.

People actually say that to you? I would change friends or associates then.

It was my black friend who said this because she feels a black person will never be the president of America or Prime Minister of Britain. Thats why I asked the question to see if people do feel this way. Thanks for responding.

I agree with you, but people tend to associate certain traits and stereotypes with certain races. We all do it, whether we want to admit to it or not - some just do it more than others do. I don't really care about skin color - if someone stands up for what I believe to be the right values, I have no problem with them representing me.
