Who else wud have made the role memorable?

Quite hard to imagine anybody else playing it. I guess Mel Gibson could have - he was so amazing in Breaveheart Couldn't have been Tom Cruise - last samurai was comparatively a softer role Brad Pitt - again not strong enough, similar role which I thought he didn't perform so well in was Troy Tom Hanks - saving private ryan, green mile - more of a character that can guide people. Bruce willis - maybe again not so sure if he could have carried it off Sylvester Stalone/Arnold Schwarzenegger - both of them lack the acting ability. Denzel Washington - Apart from the fact that he wouldn't fit the role in the essence of a roman general could have done the role well. finding it hard to think of more actors. But lastly Brendan Fraser - are you kidding me...

I think apart from russel it would be Bruce willis,brad pitt in my opinion. only these two can do such a superb role..

Crowe was the perfect fit for the role. After seeing him, I could not possibly imagine anyone else playing Maximus.

I think Brad Pitt, would also have suited himself well for the movie. But, the catch is that, he couldn`t have performed as well as Russel Crowe..... It`s obvious from his character, in real, that matched well with the virtual.... :p
