Why is it called a FRENCH KISS....?

According to what can be found online for a history of the term, it stems from the stereotype that the French are morally casual people. Wordorigins.org, which specializes in these sorts of questions, says the term dates back to the 1920's, but doesn't know who exactly coined the phrase.
