CAN ANIMALS COUNT?

Pigeons can count the grains. If you usually put 8 grains and once you put 9, it picks only 8. What is your opinion not only on pigeons, but on other animals too reg. their ability to count.

I think animals go by a total quantity (not on numbers) and they cannot count like human beings 1,2, 3, 4,5,
