The Atkins Nutritional approach is popularly known as the Atkins diet or just Atkins. It's all about low carbohydrate diet aimed at tackling obesity. Without hunger lose your weight for a happy healthy life is the objective of Atkins.
No. I never had Atkins diet because i didn't feel its necessity as I'm in fit condition. Yoga and an active life take care of the remaining aspects and achyuta don't forget about optimistic and positive thinking.

Yes I have heard that it tackles obesity. But I need to know the details of this diet. What is on and what is definitely not on. Positive thinking has got what to do with diet? I dont see the connection.

I lost a lot of weight on the Atkins diet and have kept it off. In fact I changed my eating patterns completely because, like most people in the Western World, I ate way too much carbohydrate before.
It's not a diet that suits everyone - I know lots of people who've tried it and it has made them feel really unwell. I have to say partly this is often because they're not drinking enough water and they're not taking the appropriate dietary supplements. In the induction phase of the diet when you're really restricting your carb intake to the lowest possible you must take supplements otherwise you will become deficient in some nutrients including potassium and zinc which will result in you feeling ill.
There's a lot of inaccurate information about it - it IS very restrictive at the beginning but you do gradually increase your carb intake (including fruits and vegetables) until you reach a level where you can maintain your weight loss. For me it's definitely the fastest and most effective diet I've ever done - and I've been on loads of them in the past! I was never, ever hungry on it because my protein intake was much higher than usual.
As for the side effects there have been numerous studies published (including a long term study just recently published by Stanford University) which show that following the Atkins Diet correctly actually improves blood pressure and cholesterol levels. I certainly feel better now than I ever did before and I'm a 45 year old smoker! There again as I say it won't suit everyone but it's worth trying but if you do decide to try it buy the book and follow it properly.

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reported this week that Atkins is the most successful diet for losing weight.
Notice they didn't say it was the healthiest. But for some the benefits of losing the weight are greater than the risks of the diet.
I prefer the less strict South Beach version of the diet. It's easier to stay on.

I tried it for a while. I did lose weight, but I didn't feel good. I found it very restrictive especially at the beginning. I instead went to Weight Watchers, and found that much better for me. I could eat what I wanted when I wanted, as long as you counted the points. I liked the support of the meetings, and enjoyed it a lot more.

"One of the largest studies to date has found that overweight women lost a little more weight on the popular Atkins diet than on three other well-known diet plans. However, the effect was small, and it is not clear that the Atkins diet works the way it claims."
