The problem with texting messages is that you can't send your message across as clearly as when you say it verbally. Because you can only read the words. And usually, because of character limit, you'd have to shorten your message, which could cause misunderstanding. So, if say, you and your partner are having discussions and it's pretty a serious one, it's better that you just wait til you can find time to meet with each other and talk. Texting is not bad as long as you use it at the right time and situation. Never never use it when saying something really important. If it can't wait, just push that call button and talk, NOT TEXT. To answer your title (question), it could both be informal and formal depends on how both parties communicate with each other. I think the question is not in any way related to the real issue that's indicated in the body of this thread. The formality of conversation all depends on the language, politeness and others being used by two communicating persons.

Hmm there are a lot of pros' and con's regarding texting i thing...its great when your in a rush or in an awkward position and you need to let a loved one know your on your way home, or if your in a meeting and you cant talk for like another 10min.. i think it is great that it doesnt matter where my kids are at they always have access to contact me. I think using a mobile to text in a relationship during a spat.. is starting a 'text war' it is so hard to take the 'tones' in what is being said and so much can be taken the wrong way, when your upset or angry you generally dont seem to think logical so you take the text messages most definately way out of text and tone and before you know it the original argument has turned into something way more than what it was... Texting should be used just as a quick convenience when you cant get to a phone, and need to let someone know where your at ect.

I think it depends who are you are texting. If it's a friend or family member, then it's considered informal communication. But if it's for business or work related, then it's a formal way of communication.

yes, people are so lazy spelling it correctly on text messages. this may also cause misunderstanding because of mis spelled words.

it could be a formal way of communication if you are just responsible, it is very convenient and a big help to keep in touch with your love ones from far away places. just be sensible on how you create your message.
