I am listening to the radio and the song A Candle in the Wind was playing..the song Elton John sang at Princess Diana's funeral service. I have to admit that it brought tears to my eyes at the time. However, mulling things over in mind I have to question the ethics of his (and his lyricist) adapting the song from the original homage that was paid to Marilyn Monroe, obviously because of the difference of lifestyles. The original version was in good taste and enjoyable to listen to. Of course, I have to remember that the death of Princess Diana was unforseeable and was a shock to the world...but perhaps it might have been better to come up with a new song dedicated only to Diana. I understand that the proceeds of the sales of the new version was to be donated to varios charities involved in AIDS, especially since it was one of Diana's pet projects and veru close to Elton John's heart for obvious reasons I will not go into here. But the thought has occurred to me that maybe Elton isn't/wasn't as altruistic as we may think he was. Considering....his flame in the music world was also flickering and perhaps, just perhaps, he and his lyricist saw a way to get back into the limelight. Don't get me wrong, please. I like Elton John, at least some of his songs, but in this case I do not think that he is above reproach. I am not trying in any way to smear his name or his fame. I am just putting my thoughts on paper in order to see what others think and perhaps make me see once and for all that I am wrong.

I agree, his career was flickering, and even though he was friends with Lady DI,I think he had some underlying motives. The song is a beautiful song,I rememeber Marilyn Monroe, and seeing her in several movies when I was young.

The song is beautiful in regards to both women...there is not doubt of that in anyone's mind, or at least there shouldn't be. I don't fault him for his actions in any way but I have heard so many comments that it was such a great song composed and written on such notice. I like the Princess Di lyrics better than the MM lyrics but that's purely a question of tast. Thanks so much for dropping by and for your input....new friend..
