Is it hard to hire a good building contractor?

Have you had work done on your home? Did you hire a building contractor? If so, were you satisfied with the results? It seems like a majority of people we know are unhappy with the jobs done in their homes. We are currently considering a bathroom renovation and every single person we've spoken to has said that they would not recommend the contractor that they hired. It's a bit discouraging trying to find someone reputable.

WE replaced our roof this last summer. I interview a few contractors and looked at their estimates. I ended up going with Home Depot and having them handle getting thepeople and the supplies. I think it was probably the BEST decision I could have made. Home Depot is a hugs company and will probably be around for a while, where these little contractors might be out of business any day. Since Home Depot has a reputation to uphold, they are concerned that their reputation is upheld. They order the supplies and make sure that the job is done according to the supplier's standards, so you don't have to worry about the warranty being voided because ot improper installation. Their prices was just about the same, if not less, when compared to the private contractors I interviewed and took bids from. I was extremely pleased with the results!

Well, you were lucky SageMother, Home Depot, can be a problem occaisionally, I think it depends on what you're getting done, and where you live. Because sometimes, they charge three times what others do, and their work is the same. Also, they can be a pain with payments, so saving up first is a good idea. My mom updated almost all of her home, and she bought everything from Home Depot, and then had private contractors do the work. She did get her bathroom, and house tile, and carpet done (thinkingoutloud).

Thanks to both of you for posting about Home Depot. We didn't have one nearby and they've just finished constructing one that is within driving distance. I want to go and have a look at what they have and get information about their services and such. I like to make sure that I collect details from all possible sources so that I feel I've made an informed decision.

We hired one recently. And he is almost done with the work, it is not "exactly" what we wanted, but for what we paid, it is pretty good. So, it depends on how much you are willing to pay, and what you expect. If you expect it to be 100% perfect, than try to find someone who has never had a complaint against them, and then, just settle for the price they will charge. But, if you want something, that is pretty good, and can pass all the codes, safety and healthwise (so you don't have mold growing out of your ears, hire someone who's work you've seen, with not too many complaints, and who you can afford to pay. My husband hired the guy that we got, on the good word of a friend. But, then he figured that there was some stuff he did not like, so he got himself involved, many times working beside him and the others there, to make sure everything is the way he wanted it. He even got his tape measure out, so that they would be more accurate (they were eye-balling a lot of their work, lol). I started to feel bad for the workers, because my hubby is so picky, he made them start over several times.
