I'm looking for anyone out there who has a miniature dachshund. Can you tell me about the breed? Is it a good choice for kids? What about yard size? Does this type of dog make a good indoor dog? We are planning on adopting/buying one next month (she was born last month). Thank you in advance.

They are great! We have 2 and are part of a rescue group. They are both smart and have tons of personality. You need to know that they are very territorial and will often bond with one particular member of the family. Once bonded to the family mine, at least, are very wary of strangers. They do bark at strangers and strange noises. They are also kind of hard to housetrain because they have such small bladders (at least thats what I've been told). Ours are 9 yrs and 5 yrs, and I can just now say that they are housebroken although the still have accidents sometimes. Those accidents are our fault because we are just sometimes too lazy to take them out when they need to go. I've had other people tell me thay have really good luck with doggie doors, which we don't have.

I know very little about them but do have a few things I can say here: 1) My boss years ago had 2 of them and he accidentally tripped over one and seriously injured it's spine. It cost $2000 for the surgery to fix the poor dog so be careful! 2) Out walking today I saw the cutest teeny tiny dachshund puppy. It was adorable! and a question for you... is yours going to be black, brown, both and long or short haired?

So far she looks to be reddish brown, with a darker stripe interspersed down her back. The parents are both red, mom is short hair and dad is long hair. She appears to be short haired. I can't wait to get her!

I have about 1 year old dachshund and it's the cutest "thing" I have ever seen; It's like having a dream come true for me :) Dachshunds are very active little hot-dogs, they love to dig (they are used for hunting on badgers), though I keep mine in the house mostly - so she digs in my bed (looking for badgers under my pillow:D). I have a big yard so she can run, but I also know people who are living in small apartments with dachshund. They are very good with kids, often very protective, though they can be very jealous on other dogs, or any other kind of pets. Be careful if you plan to keep dachshund outside your house in the winter time - they are very, very sensitive on cold :( And try not to overfeed him - they are bottomless fur bags and they will eat until they explode, and since they have very fragile spines, long bodies and short paws - it could be very dangerous. About their spines - also be careful not to let your hot-dog stand in vertical position (they often do that). Now sorry if I'm a bit late with this reply, I joined mylot today :}

i have a dach he's 1 years old and his name is Hunter.. he's a great dog.. he's great with my son which is 5 and i just had a daughter 3 weeks ago.. at first he was frieghtened by her cry.. and very curious.. now he just ignores the fact that she's around.. he just avoids her.. so i haven't had a problem with him and my children.. i do know that dachs have spinal problems and you have to be really careful with them and their backs.. he is an indoor dog.. it took a while to train him.. as far as the potty goes.. he decided that my entertainment stand was a good enough place to pee.. and it was ok to poop under my dining room table.. thank goodness thats all fixed now.. i also have a boxer.. they are great buddies.. he's great with other dogs.. here's a link of a pic of my dogs.. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y49/Twigebones/56340676811_0_ALB.jpg
