I am in middle of construction of my own website and I have decided that...IT IS HARD! I picked out the style and colors. That was the fun part. And I picked out some fun stuff to go on it like message board, guest book, cartoon and lots of other stuff. Tahat was fun too. Then it hit me. Nothing connects to anything, I can't find my links and I am totally confused. I had to stop and take a break from working on it and come ask you guys. Have any of you made your own site? Was it hard? Did you use a wizard/set up type thing to set it up? I am using Bravehost. Is anyone familiar with that site or service? Thanks Oh and if anyone wants to try this themselves please please tell me so I can refer you! I will get a whole dollar.

I have been building my own websites for the past 10 years and self taught myself. I learned with FrontPage for the first three years. And I have been using Dreamweaver since 2000. I am currently using Dreamweaver MX 2004. I have looked at other programs and I have not find anything better. I am currently in the process of building a new website. I started with the template of another program and did spend almost a week editing that template to have it the way I wanted it. Building your homepage is the hardest part as you need to be creative in order to make it look good. Once you have it... you can use it as a template to build your other pages. Besides that... learning how to use the program to build that website does take also a lot of time. I don't try to learn the program before building the site. I learn it while I build it. I go and learn only what I need to know to do a specific thing. One step at a time. I was very confortable using FrontPage when I switched to Dreamweaver... and I knew a lot about building websites already. But Dreamweaver was a totally different program... and it took me 12 months to be confortable with it as I used to be with FrontPage. Besides that... you need to know a lot more than one program to build websites. You really need to know about everything. The second most important thing is to have a good image editor to edit graphics... and learn how to do it. As you go along... you need to learn to read your html codes to understand what they do in order to edit them. Simply putting things on your page does not always do the trick. The only way to have them where you want them is to edit those codes. I cannot tell you here about everything you need to learn to build a website. All I can tell you is that you need a lot of patience and be committed 100% to the task. You also need to enjoy the challenge of doing it. If you are serious about it... in a couple of years, you won't be a professional... but you will be pretty good. You can see my website at http://www.aussies-online.com

Amen to that! And no matter how much you work, you never finish, because there's always a little more tweaking to do. I use HTML Kit, have for a couple of years, now, and I still get confused sometimes.

I have one simple website on freewebs. http://www.freewebs.com/djbtol/index.htm I am also still learning, and freewebs made the process fairly straightforward. I have heard of braveheart, but have never used it. Blogs are similar to websites and can do a lot of the same tricks. Here are links to a couple of my blog sites: http://www.blogfeast.net/blog/djbtol http://www.bloggerparty.com/blog/djbtol Have a great day.

Often times the motivation that causes one to start a web page does not remain, so the desire to maintain and update diminishes.

I have 2 websites. Both using wordpress to save me time. One is a recipe website - http://www.mouthwateringmunchies.com .. I used to do all my coding myself in notepad. For learners, frontpage would be good.

A website develops over time. Start small. Put up a little bit of this and that and eventually you will begin to see a theme emerge. At that point, you can fine tune things. I have several sites and I've been doing this for over 10 years. My personal site has morphed into something new over and over. I agree with those who have mentioned blogging. it might be the perfect way for you to get started with your own little piece of the net.

I sold it though . It made me a huge amount of money but I felt it best move on to bigger and better things . From owning an adult site it opened a bunch of doors for me in which i actually opened a business for myself... Everything to with website , marketing etc . I sometimes miss my adult site but i have a lot of knowledge that i can pass onto others about the website business.
