Explain This! I caught my homophobic dad watching The L Word!

I walked upstairs and there was dad, watching The L Word. I pretended to have no idea what show it was, and asked him, "What are you watching?" He pressed info to check. I'm like, "Oh, some rated R movie or something?" And then he changed the channel. Why is my homophobic dad watching The L Word? That's rather strange! Maybe it will make him more accepting? Or maybe it's just true all straight men like to watch lesbians? But they don't want one for a daughter...

I know a lot of straight guys who watch the show. And not because of just wanting to see two lesbians together. He probably has some interest and he may be trying to figure out if this is your world. But he obviously doesn't want you to know. Rosie O'Donnell and her talk show were the best thing that ever happened to my mother.

I was really shocked because my dad is so against lesbians. He totally hates Ellen and calls her Ellen Degenerate.

I think you've got it there. All straight men love to watch lesbians. I have a friend who's ex-husband though hates lesbians too. Even before she left him for a woman (her first experiance). I lent her Chasing Amy while she was still married because I thought she's enjoy it. Well she never got around to watching it but he did and hated it. I thought he was strange. I thought it was in straight mens DNA. But maybe by watching The L Word he'll come around.

I agree with the above poster. I don't think that I have ever heard of a straight man who isn't at least interested in the concept, lol! No matter how homophobic he may seem, it's true that men are usually really only homophobic when it comes to the idea of other men. Two women together is a totally different concept to them. lol ^_^ It would be truly nice though if your father could gain some insight and understanding from watching the show. I've never even really heard much about the L Word, but I'm getting the gist of it from the discussion here *laugh*

I have never known any homophobic straight guy who didn't love to watch two or more women together. It's the old double standard. It's gross if it's another guy but totally exceptable and hot if it's women. It works on the principle of loving to watch hot women get sexy.Anything is exceptable as long as they get to watch the action, real life or film.Sometimes men really are dogs.

Just so long as it isn't their daughter. Because I'm sure bringing over a girlfriend and kissing in front of dad would not help him approve of me any faster. :)

In my opinion, it's very comment that straight guy watch lesbian movie, even it is blue movie. For they want to see girls' bodies, the body organt can satisfy their vision desire. For straight guy, it will be disgust if they see two boys are making love, but if it's two girls , it's OK. It also can explain why some girls love to read cartoon which called "Boy Love".

I have to laugh, that's pretty funny. It's not like he couldn't have realised what the show was about, as there's no episode that doesn't at least have some 'girl kissing.' Who knows why he was watching it. Maybe he was channel surfing and came across the gorgeous girls of The L Word and decided to watch for a while. Maybe he is a closeted L Word watcher who has a crush on Shane or Bette. Sneaking upstairs to watch it week in week out. Maybe he's just trying to get some understanding of this part of your life and by watching lesbians on television may give him a greater degree of understanding and acceptance. Or maybe, as you said he just likes to watch lesbians!

LOL. It's funny how tv can help to change people's views on things. I would also consider my dad to be homophobic, but one of his favorite tv shows was Will and Grace, so go figure. And when a very close friend (who was like a sister to me) came out to my family, he hardly blinked an eye. It was definitely not the reaction I would have expected. So, maybe your dad doesn't agree with homosexuality, but he has learned to tolerate it...

Maybe he's just learned to tolerate it on TV. :) He didn't like Will and Grace though.

This could be seen through a couple of ways. Maybe your dad, like a lot of other guys out there, just likes seeing beautiful girls. Maybe he likes seeing a lot of them. Maybe he likes seeing them in the foreplaying act of kissing. There are a lot of things that could turn a guy on and girls kissing girls is one of the commoner (and easier to understand) ones. Alternatively, he could also be trying to get some insight into the homosexual world. If that's the case, things will get very interesting because media (especially film and TV) can sometimes get the facts all screwed up just for a ratings/review boost. If this is the case, it's better that someone knowledgeable or trustworthy opens your dad's eyes to how it is.

Very good point! I think it's not really the best show to open his eyes up to the lesbian world, because it tends to be quite unrealistic (in the beginning it was better, but still, it's all for reviews now it seems).

lol. That's quite amusing. I hope it does make him more accepting. I know that seeing trans people on television helped to make my parents more accepting of trans people (although i'm not trans so it's not the same situation as yours). My biphobic mother loves torchwood but she didn't realise how much bisexuality there was in it and by the time she did realise she was already hooked.

My thoughts: either he finds it hot, or he wants to understand you better. :) LOL

Your assumptions are correct. Question is, if you're a lesbian, are you OK with homophobic dads watching lesbians?

Wellllll... there are some awfully attractive women on the show... Or maybe he's just a Cybill Shepherd fan? ;)

I guess that is something you'll just have to chalk up to life experience. Yes, it is hypocritical of him, and it is a common activity for men of all persuasions. The fact is women making out or making love is a prettier sight than men doing it (usually). Perhaps you are still too young to challenge your Father over this, but it is one that he should have to think about.

Men like girl on girl action. I think they are looking for tips on how to please a woman. I doubt The L Word would change ones mind on homosexuality. In my opinion, The L Word does not represent most lesbians. It seems to be more of an artsy show than a show that deals with real issues.

I'm on the boat with everybody else here pretty much. All in all I think he just saw some really pretty women on TV, left that channel on, and enjoyed what he saw for a while. The women on The L Word are not bad to look at at all. I could see where any one of them (not Max lol) would catch a straight man's eye. Best case senerio is maybe he was trying to peer into your world for a little bit. He saw lesbian on info, switched to that channel, and was seeing what you might be all about. Your father doesn't seem very open minded, but maybe he just needs to see you in a loving relationship with a woman. Sometimes that turns everything around. Other times things never change. Good luck with your pops.

maybe your homophobia of your dad is for gays. Its kinda strange. Try to tease your dad and ask him about lesbian or any topic about homosexual. Make a questions that will freak out your dad.

Oh I've made questions before that freak out dad! Once I asked him if perhaps he was a closeted gay since he is so homophobic. I don't recommend rocking the boat like that...

I couldn't figure out what you meant by the L word until I read the whole thing, that was very clever indeed...who cares what he watches as long as he isn't doing something against the law.
