I have been wanting to make a new walkway from my current walkway on down to where we park our car. We tend to never park in the garage and the current walkway goes from the back door to the garage. I found this really cool idea for stepping stones. I have not used this pattern as of yet but do plan on using it in the spring. It seems to be really easy to make. It seems to be a great way to use some items to recycle things from around the house.
Pizza Box Stepping Stones
4 wire coat hangers for each tiele Approximately 13 inch take out pizza box (one box may be used to makee 32-3 tiles
You will also need: brick mortor mix, a large heavy duty garbage bag, coarse sandpaper, small rocks, utility knife and 2 inch packing tape
1. use utility knife to cut lid from box
2. To Strengthen sides of box, apply several layers of tape to top edges and sides of box.
3. Cut a square from garbage bag about 3 inches larger on all sides than the box. Line each box with palstic square
4. To reinforce mortoar, place hangers in bottom of box.
5. Follow manufacturer's instructions to mix mortar. Pour mortar into box, filling box to about 1/2 from top. Before mortar sets up, use either finger or a stick to write message in mortar or press small rocks into mortar, smoothing mortar around rocks. Allow mortar to set completely.
6. Using edges of plastic to lift tile and remove tile from box. Remove plastic from bottom of tile. If necessary, use sandpaper to smooth edges of tile.

Hey, great idea! I have been wanting to make a stepping stone path to our screen house and sheds. The kits are so costly. You could probably use other boxes as well. Everything comes in a package these days.

I think everything is better when it is homemade. I can't wait till spring to do my path from the backwalk to the driveway.

Well, that's a lot of work for a couple of stepping stones.
Nice explanation by the way.

I will require more than a few for my project. I am a person who loves the "I did it myself" feeling.
If I only needed a couple, I may just be tempted to buy them already made. :)

That sounds like a very nice idea. I definately have enough pizza boxes. I forgot to put out the recycling last week so I have a few. And what a wonderful excuse to buy more pizza.lol. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, one can never have too much pizza. LOL
I will need alot of the boxes though. I will have to have others to help me save them. My whole community may be eating pizza till spring arrives. LOL

Wow what a great idea. And alot cheaper than buying them. I't a good way to get rid of those awful metal clothes hangers too, that no one uses anymore. This is an awesome way to re-use and recycle. I'm going to pass this on to my freecycle friends if you don't mind.
Thanks for posting this, I really appreciate it. Good luck, I hope it comes out nice.

I hope it turns out well too. I think it will be beautiful. If I can find that many pizza boxes. I may end up using something else as a mold. We too have many of those hangers. My husband gets uniforms on them. We give them away till nobody wants them anymore. Even the thrift store does not want them. LOL

This is so clever. I never would have thought that you could use a pizza box and wire hangers to make stepping stones! I love that you can make different size stones by using different size pizza boxes. I'm already planning the great designs I could make in the stepping stones using those smooth glass stones you can buy at the craft or dollar stores. Thanks for the great idea.

I know, I am excited too. I have so many plans. We have needed to do this for a few years now but keep putting it off. I will need alot stepping stones to complete my project.
Wouldnt colored aquarium rocks look so cool in them?
Wonder how crused sea shells would look. The pioneers used broken plates in there cement. Wow The possibilities are endless.

That is a great idea!! I love the thought of using pizza boxes as recycling too. I also couldn't give away wire hangers, and my daughter has a phobia about them! Thanks for another great idea, just like all your recipes!! :-)

Have you ever painted your stepping stones? If so how did you protect your painting?
