our present science has recognized importance of the sun for human beings only few centuries back but ancient people have succeeded a lot of years back ,hence they have dedicated this festival to the sun god and started makar sankranthi

It is celebrated in all parts of the country. In Tamilnadu it is known as Pongal and in Andhra Pradesh too. In Kerala it is Onam and in Punjab it is Lohri.
