How does a discussion make the front page?

I make all of these discussion and I ever see them get up there on the front page ever. What is the accomidation for the front page? Is there any requirements? Am I missing something?

I think it comes down to timing i see mines on the front page quite alot, also i heard that if you receive a best reponse then you will get higher up the front page because you are am good user. I am not sure if this is true but this is what i have heard.
