With a deal worth over $250m, beckham is the biggest name to sign up for major leage soccer since it started in 96.
He says he's gioing to hopefully get more american kids into the sport he loves (obviously the money was a big decider too!) As i understand it, he's already a big name out there so shouldn't find it too hard getting recognised. But is he big enough to change american soccer completely?
Will soccer ever become more popular than other American major sport, as it is in most of Europe and South America?

Most Americans know of David Beckham as Posh Spice's husband -- not because he plays soccer. Most Americans did not even know that LA had a soccer team. He should prepare himself for the fact that his coming here will have absolutely no effect on the interest in soccer or lack thereof. He should just take his money and enjoy it. Because that is all he is gonna get out of this.

In a word 'no', but I shall say more. The 1996 launch was a re-launch, and many equally rich and famous players have played in the States; Pele, Gordon Banks, Kevin Keegan, Johann Cruyf.
The US already is fanatical about 3 mens professional sports, and hasn't the room for a 4th.
Do you think everone in the UK would drop football & cricket, if Jamal Lewis came and played for the London Monarchs? Me neither, he'll just sink with his joke of a wife, especially when they become Christian Scientists, or whatever, Tom & Katie (Victorias new best friends!) are!

I doubt hell influence much anything. US had Pelé, the greatest football player, then Romario playing there, but sadly US tends to think badly of anything that isnt American, incluiding sports. Pigs will fly before americans play real football.
And those wishing to state that MAradonna was the best, no, Maradonna was a wimp and spent the last 10 years of his carrer crying on the grass or doped, Pelé was a great from begginning to the end.

As a name Beckham will certainly lift the profile of the American game, but you must realise Beckham is at the end of his carreer and couldnt command a first team place at Madrid.
However, as a markitable brand his name will still fill stadia its just that he is now ready for retirement, i assume he is cashing in
