The book "The Singularity is Near" by Ray Kurzweil

Has anyone read the book. If so what do you think? Are we really on the the verge of a new era for mankind brought on by exponential growth in technology? Why don't more people know about this? Why aren't more people talking about this? How do you think this event will transform us?
