Who uses ebay and has been sniped?

It's exciting. Finding something you really like on ebay for WAY cheaper than you can find it in stores. you place your bid and continue checking it every day or so to see if you're still a high bidder. Then, on the day of the auctions' end, you check the item and refresh the page BAM, someone with 5 seconds left placs a bid just above yours, winning the auction, and leaving you feeling like you wasted your time and hope. Who has been victim to the infamous ebay SNIPE. Share your stories. Also, how can we do away with this?

You are going to have to play the game smarter. Basically, if you have time to watch and make sure you are the high bidder, hold your horses and just watch the item and DON'T bid yet...but bid at the VERY last minute you possibly can...if possible be around the time the auction is about to end and put in your maximum bid then. It's the only true way to play the game and win unless you are only doing buy it nows.

You took the words right off my keyboard, everybodylovesleah. That is the only way to increase the chance of getting the item. If someone else is watching the item and they are using sniper software, if you bid too early they will pretty much get you everytime, so it is important to get in during the last few seconds. One point though is that you have to make sure that you are already signed into ebay, otherwise you could go past the deadline while you are signing in.

I get sniped all the time, but it's because I bid early on common items and I know I'll get outbid. I usually make a modest bid and then make my maximum bid, but they get me somehow. Around Christmas, I was bidding on this HP laptop and it started at maybe 200.00, so I knew it would be raised tremendously, so I bid 350.00 at first and put in a max bid of 700.00 and no one touched the bid until maybe the last 10 minutes and got me for a mere 710.00... anyway, win some, lose a lot.

I have been sniped . We bid on a nice car that had a handicap lift, which we needed. We bid what the seller asked and stayed ahead the entire auction. We even went to San Diego to look at it. We were ahead until the last few seconds and then were overbid by a few cents. I was so disappointed! I understand that this kind of bidding is done by computer, and there is no way you could bid higher because it squeezes in at the last moment. If there is any way e bay could get rid of this sort of bidding, it should.

This is in response to those above that are saying you have to watch closely at the end of the auction. I was sitting at my computer until the end of the auction. It showed me winning until, as I said, the last second. somehow, the computer that was bidding also knew what my highest bid was (above what was showing) and outbid that by a few cents. This is different than what you other people are taling about. This is not the normal or fair way to win an auction.

I have and usually don't mind much, but once it was the only thing and hard to find and really wanted it for a birthday gift for my husband and it hurt because it was something I had been looking for months for. We finally did get it a "Mrs Curtis Cookbook" But long after his birthday.

Well I dont even know what sniper software is let alone been sniped. Of course maybe I have and didnt realize it. The only way I bid on anything is if I am able to watch it down to the last second. I always bid in the last minute. There have only been 2 or 3 times I was outbid. I have won everything I really wanted for the price I wanted it doing it this way. It really helps if you have a highspeed connection. Highspeed refreshes the page somewhere between 1-4 seconds & dial up sometimes would take as much as 30. And as all ebayers know the last 30 seconds can mean the most. There was ony the one time that we lost and it wasnt something I was gonna die if I didnt have.

I have to say I don't have any problem with people using software to place their bids. They are still setting a maximum that they wish to go to, and if all the excitement happens in the last few seconds, so be it. When I sell items I expect most of the bids nowadays to appear in the last 10 seconds of the auction. By not bidding earlier they are merely not adding themseleves to the bidding until they are sure they want to participate, and I don't see any reason why they shouldnt use software to place that for them. I've even used it myself a couple of times when the auction I was interested in would be finishing at a time when I couldnt get to the computer, I just set my maximum and trusted to fate, one I lost (the bidding was already above my maximum when the computer put my bid in) one I won. Mostly though its as a seller that I have experienced this and I really don't see why people get in a twist about it.

One of the first items that I ever bid on was a strawberry shortcake toy chest for my soon-to-be-born niece's nursery. It was a really great piece and I new my sister would love it. I was really excited about it and had assumed I would get it because I was the only bidder...that is until the last 3 seconds of the auction when someone sniped me. Of course I was disappointed, but I wasn't angry because winning and losing is the nature of any auction. Still, it would have been great to have won that item for my niece.

I am a seller, and have seen what you said happen on my items. I must confess, that on occassion as a buyer, I have done that the last minute if I really wanted it bad enough. It's part of the game of the auction.

Wasn't sure what you were referring to.. Sniped. After reading the replies I think I got it. I have bought a couple things on ebay, mostly videos/cds for my grand daughter. But I have a bid now on an item. I did use the program to automatically up my bid til it was over or outbid. I get the idea now. Just wait and do that at the end. Guess it depends how many others want it. I noticed there are so many people selling the same stuff seems like it would be no peoblem to get an item for a decent price. I have alot to learn.

Oh yes this has happened to me!lol I have learned to be there with my finger on the button if I really want something. I have also seen this happen on my own auctions. There was one person that had bid on an item since it was just about listed and then outbid a few people along the way. Then as it's ending, BAM! comes this person who had never even put in a bid out of the blue, taking it right from the end of the auction! Kind of exciting when it heats up at the end for the seller, but not on the other end!

I agree, as a seller, I get disappointed when I see that no one has outbid this low bidder and i think I'm going to have to sell this item for cheap. Then in the last 2 minutes of the auction, the price triples. I love it!

I don't know how you can stay away from people sniping. It has happened to me on several occasions, and I was not too happy about it. What I can say is to make sure you are on the computer and watching your auction, don't let the other person snipe you.

This is why it is called an auction! I agree with Old Buddy. If you put in your maximum bid and get beat then so what! If you aren't willing to pay anymore then you lose. This is regardless of sniping or not. It could still have 3 days left on it and you could already be outbid.

I have found out that this happens all to much. If there is something that I really want, I enter the price I am willing to pay for it, and then I wait. yes I am one of teh people who will sit there the last 15 minutes of an auction and keep refreshing the page. This is how auctions work. You cant change that. Its all apart of the game called bidding.

I need more information to get part time job in ebay. Some says to do that we have to buy some software and pay monthly fees also. And some said we can do that using some own methods. So I need more information who knows this software too much. Can u help my friends to share your ideas.

Yes , you're right. Ebay is a waste of money for sellers. I've paid for many items on that site hoping that they sell and they never sell. So I don't encourage anyone to sell on ebay. I say again it;s a waste of money. And if u search ebay pages you'll find that only one item sells per page. That means their system is lacking something. I assure.
