The UK has too many names (or parts of it have different names and people often refer to the UK by some synecdoche) Has anyone else thought about it All the names and what they refer to? (I mean official names, not "Anglo's Devil Island of the Nazi conspiracy" etc!) UK money is the same, GBP, UKP, Pounds, UK sterling, Pounds sterling I never know which letter to pick on those pull down windows on web-sites to find either the country or currency. Is there any other country with too many alternative incorrect names?

I can understand your problem. It is for an outsider complicated and not helped by so many people saying England when they mean the United Kingdom. The British Isles includes Northern Ireland which is part of the UK and the Republic of Ireland which is an independent country. Don't know of any other nation with the same confusing set up. The real name according to my passport is "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". Andy, would it surprise you to know that in Scotland they use Scottish pounds?. When I was a boy we had 7 or 8 different kinds of notes since all the major banks printed there own. Now there are only three. Bank of Scotland, Royal Bank of Scotland and the Clydesdale Bank. When do you think there will be a "British Euro?".

Well the UK is the group name for 4 countries. Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales you can also call the place Great Britain which is about the same as United Kingdom really.
