Buffy, a seven year old german shepherd, may lose one of her legs after attemping to protect her owner from being mugged. The german shepherd was shot in her left front leg by an armed man who approached Will Bartley, an Okland resident of 44, as he pulled into his driveway last Wednesday night after he had finished with his work for the day. There is a 50/50 chance that the leg may have to be amputated, although otherwise the dog is fine and will survive. How brave are dogs, and how loyal and protective? I know of no finer creatures in nature ^_^ More here: http://www.davesdaily.com/out.php?id=23634&url=http%3A%2F%2Fapnews.myway.com%2Farticle%2F20070113%2FD8MK52I00.html

Another example of how amazing dogs are. They really are intuitive and smart, aren't they? Buffy deserves a medal for bravery. I will say a prayer that he is OK and doesn't have to lose his leg. But, if he does, he will be able to adapt; dogs and cats seem to do OK with amputations and learn rapidly how to compensate.

I really hope that the poor dog doesn't have to lose her leg, either. But you're right, animals are really good at learning to compenate, and in the long run I'm just so glad that she will survive. She did such a brave deed! ^_^

Any dog owner knows, that there just isn't a better friend in the world. Also, dogs never ask for anything in return. They just love us, and work for us, and protect us, no matter what the odds, all for free, never a price. Just a hug and kiss is good enough.

Yes, that is really cool. You would be amazed at how protective some dogs are about their owners. Me and my brothers were just goofing around playing and my little 6.5lb yorkie started running around barking and ready to bite. Very good article thank you for sharing...

My daughter works in a vet hospital and they care for our local police dogs. It is amazing how much a dog will do to protect those they love. They truly are man's BEST friend, no matter what some may think.

Oh what a wonderful dog, Buffy is I am happy that he was not killed by this dreadful criminal that may have killed Will Bartley, and Will is so lucky for having a great animal, I love dogs and I do own one and they love their owners provided the owners treat them right.

I found this story online about a dog that helped save this family. This is the story I found. Like a bad dream, Priscilla Tavenier awoke at 2:30 a.m. Friday and heard the dog barking frantically. Wondering what was going on, she ventured outside to find that her house at 210 Brandy Brook Road was on fire, nearly three weeks after a fire destroyed the familys barn. Jake, a 13-year-old St. Bernard/Chow mix, sounded the alarm just in time for Priscilla to awaken the rest of the family and get them outside. Her husband, Clement, their son, David, his wife, Tina, and their three children, Deanna, Robert and Steven, and a family friend, Fred Lethbridge, all made it out safely, thanks to their furry canine. It is suspected that the fire started outside the shop that is attached to the garage, which, in turn, is attached to the house, where theyve lived for about a dozen years. The configuration made it easy for the fire to gain momentum before firefighters arrived.

Dogs are great, I mean doggys, like a german shepard. Brown on the bottom, black on the top. Cats are just as great, they happily jump up and stuff.

Wow! I think this dog deserves a "Home town hero award" some towns do give out rewards like this. My brother owns a german shepard and he says they are very protective dogs and golden retrievers also. The owner better be spoiling his dog from now on especially since he protected him from being mugged.

I used to own a pit bull. He was the most lovable dog around us but if any outsider ever tried to do any harm watch out.

Dogs really are wonderful pets and very protective of their owners. A friend of mine's 3 year old nephew got lost one day. They live in a very secluded area with woods behind their house that stretches out for miles. His older sister was suppose to be watching him, but he wandered off by himself without her seeing. The dog followed him. When his mother realized he was missing, she called 911. The police came and were searching the woods for him. They heard a dog start barking, and found the boy lying on the ground. He had fallen and sprained his ankle and the dog stayed right by his side. Dogs truly are amazing animals.
