First the areas on the cloth are identified. These areas are covered with a "Dye-resistant" paint ie anything under it will not be affected. This process of painting on cloth with resist technique was in use in the early centuries AD in Africa, middle east and several parts of Asia. The word Batik is an Indonesian- Malay word. it reached its highest artistic expression in Indonesia especially in Java. Its immense popularity over the years has made the "Face" of Asian art. Batik paintings popularity can be attributed to two reasons. The designs are not woven but painted. It means a far greater artistic freedom. And the fastness of the colours. Though with the times and the foraying of modern production methods reduced the contribution of human element,Batik didn't lose its luster.

I like to watch the artist create the batik painting when I lived in Borobudur. they came from Yogyakarta and surround. It reminded me of my grand ma whom do traditional batik in her spare time.
