A cable contractor has been charged in the death of a nurse whose body was found in her bathtub last October, and police suspect him in a similar slaying that occurred last Friday(Chicago).Comcast spokesman said suspect did not have criminal background. Let say that you call camcast and order your service. Most likely you will trust that company. What can we do to be safe?

Wow. I didnt hear about that one. Usually whenever the cable guy or repair guy or whomever comes into my home that Im not aware of, i like to make sure that im here with my girlfriend so nothing happens just to be safe. Normally this is something is is quite odd and is like one out a million shot that these things happen, but unfortunately they do. I know to get jobs like this you are required in most states to have a criminal background check done, even though this guy had no history. Its a sad story, but it just shows that you have to be more aware of your surroundings and take caution to everything you do. Best of luck to you !

surely. if it is a reputed company then we would def have faith. that is why companies should hire a person after checking his background. but also now the crime rate is so high that normal people cant do about this. seriously the law body should do something otherwise there will be increase in such crime and life will be at stake for common people.

If I was a woman, I would have a person be with you, for when the service people are supposed to show up to do the work, uncle, father, friend, etc. whichever you think will work as a safety net. Or my favorite have a nice big german shepard dog as your pet, these dogs for sure will protect you. I had one in my past, girlfriend's van, she had MS and was waiting for me with our german shepard (Spock),while I was picking up some BBQ Ribs. Well this drunk came up to her window to ask her for some money, he did not know the dog was laying on the floor by her. Well Spock heard the guy approach the Van, and he stood up, and gave the guy a hard look, and the guy got out of there real quick.

My pets need to be protected...barking wont help, because nobody will hear it. Yes, friend...best idea......or we can always search for friend's friends who provided needed services. I am going to check refferals.

Many people don't think about when they admit people into their home. They figure if they are from a company they have to be safe. Sadly that isn't always the truth. I know myself when I am going to have a worker in my house I have someone here with me along with my dog. I keep an eye on them and I always keep a good distance between the worker and myself. It is always better to be safe then sorry. If they don't like it too bad. It's my home, my life that I am putting on the line whenever I allow someone inside, I will take what precautions I need to in order to keep myself and others safe. The workers should understand that. If they don't oh well I'm not worried about them.

Well I used to have some faith but I had a personal experience which made me change my opinion... We had cable service from Comcast. When we called Comcast for service for a problem they sent a person dressed like he was a gangster!! He even did not have any paper showing that he was from Comcast!! Comcast are selling there contracting service to anybody literally anybody... Since then I have switched to Dishnetwork and I am happy..Now I do not have faith in any service provider person coming at home.

When I get my carpet clean, I let 2 guys in and I did not feel safe at all. I was on my cell phone with my friend during their work, because I did not like them.

I talked to the guy who installed my Comcast and he told me that most of the people they send out aren't even Comcast employees anymore they are subcontractors. That's so if you get robbed, raped, or murdered Comcast passes the legal liability on to the subcontractor who probably does not have as deep of pockets to be sued for negligence.

Wow...that is crazy. I personally have never had any problems with service people. However...I guess that you should always ask for identification for one thing...and just be on guard...that is all you can do. You can't be a mind-reader after all...

Identification would not help in this case.

That is really interesting. I don't really know what we should do. I suppose we can just try to be safe and take all the necessary precautions that we can.

Wow, that is a really scary story.. it definitely makes me think twice about being home alone when any service people come by to work on anything. I think that one thing we can do is make sure that we are never home by ourselves in this sort of a situation. Keep as many of the family members home as possible. That might be a deterrant of some sort to anyone who might do something if it were just you there in the house. But I hope that this was just an isolated incident, really.

It's certainly hard to trust anyone you don't know. However, you're supposed to be able to trust service people..it's just one of those things that you're supposed to be able to do, but sadly, you can't trust anyone anymore.

yes that is some sick people other there, you cant trust any of them, i guess the best way to do thing is call one of your friend or neighbor over when you have strange people in your house, atleast that way they can help. i am not really scare of anyone i can self defense. but doesnt mean i let my guard down neither

Hi Difficult one this one All you can do is to HOPE that the company does its checks on the employee's! If a contractor is then required to come to your home, it is then obvisouly beneficial if you can have someone with you whilst the contractor is there!

I guess you never know when you invite a service man into your home. The only thing you can do is try to make sure someone is at home with you. Call a friend or a family member. That's the best advice I can give.

Comcast has a point, if the guy had a clean background they don't have much way of knowing or expecting that he might commit these crimes. As for who can you trust... There is no way to know who is trust worthy and who is not. These are just cable repairmen... More disturbing would be crimes commmitted by other professionals who hold even more trust, like doctors or clergy. Of course, even these wouldn't compare to a parent/guardian abusing their position of trust to commit murder.

Its hard to trust anyone you dont know. One suggestion would be just dont let your gaurd down maybe carry the phone with you and be ready to call for help and if you feel that uncomforitable when a service worker comes to your house maybe have someone be there with you.
