why is it that humans can move their eyes in opposite directions toward the nose, but not away from the nose?

My guess is that it involves evolution. That which is useful and helps you to survive is more likely to be passed on as a genetic trait. There is a good reason for your eyes to move in the opposite direction toward your nose. This allows you to focus on objects extremely close to you. What about the opposite case? If your eyes move in opposite directions away from your nose, it is not possible for them to focus on anything. In fact, you will end up with a very confusing double image that would be just about impossible for your brain to process. This serves no purpose and obviously was never selected for genetically by evolution. The above is the long answer to the question. The short answer is that God made our eyes that way. Evolution was the tool He used.
