I love dogs and used to have 2 Basenji's ... but have had cats for the last 20 years .. An Old English Mastiff that weighed 343 pounds and measured 8 feet 3 inches from nose to tail ... is the biggest dog on record ... A dogs sense of smell is 40 times more sensitive than humans ... because a dogs nose has an astonishing 200 million scent receptors .. mind you we don't do too bad with 5 million ... but humans have 6 times more taste buds than dogs do ... Dogs can locate the direction a sound is coming from in six-hundreths of a second and will hear sounds from 4 times further away than humans can Dogs have around 100 different facial expressions .. many of which are made with the ears .. incidentally pit bulls and bulldogs only have 10 facial expresions which may be the reason why they get into fights so often ... they've been 'misunderstood' by the other dog ... The Saluki is possible the oldest breed of dog .. and can be traced back to Mesopotamia 3000 BC ... A Pekinese called Sun Yat Sen along with an unnamed Pomeranian were rescued from the sinking of the Titanic .. they and their owners were in the first wave of life boats to be launched .. and before the seriousness of the situation was realised .. so fewer people were in the boats and didn't mind having dogs taking up space ... The cost of keeping a dog is around £500-£1000 a year depending on the size of the dog .. so you'll need to set aside at least £10 a week to keep your pet pooch in treats and toys ... but never give your dog chocolate as it contains theobromine which is poisonous to dogs .. so please stick to the proper dog chox ... The Pet Foods Manufacturing Association have worked out through surveys that around 6.5 million dogs live in the UK ... thats roughly one dog to every 10 humans .. and approx 75% of those dogs are pedigree
