http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=12396 This is crazy! I knew it wasn't good to hold in your pee, but sheez. This article says: "Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is upset by a rapid intake of water. It is unclear how serious a danger to the contestant’s health KDND knew the competition to be at the time." Did you know that this could happen to you? I have an overactive bladder anyway, and I probably couldn't have held it in, even at the radio station.

Wow!!! I had no clue that one could be ill or die from doing such a thing!!! You know that family is going to be filing a lawsuit! And they will win. Regardless of the station telling them contestants to not put their health at risk...they still created a situation for this lady that paid with her life!!! I am sure that the marketing person that came up with the idea that is was funny, "Hold your Wee to win a Wii". But even though they did not know of the serious complications it caused, they will still be held responsible! Wow! Next time I am driving cross country, I will be sure to stop and "Wee". LOL Great discussion! Thanks!

Wow! Waiver or not, I would be suing them! I don't think the contestants had any clue it could be life threatening!

I guess 3 of the dj's from the radio station were fired, as well as 5 other employees. A nurse reportedly called in to let them know of the potential danger/risk, and the guy said to her that they all signed a waiver and "so what".

Isn't that awful. I was just watching about it on the news again. So I did a search to see if anyone had wtitten about it. Who knew, certainly not me.. I did get really sick one day in the summer. I was 18 and working as a nurses aide. It was over 100 degrees and no ac. I drank so much water I was sick, headache, dizzy, nauseous.. I had to go home and went to sleep. I was sick for 2 days and I am sure now it was because of all the water I drank. Scary.

Thing is, most people would probably just assume they were sick from being dehydrated or something!

Wow!! I didn't know that this could happen to you! I know that it is bad to hold your bladder, but I could not imagine that to happen! The radio station probably thought it would be funny to do a contest holding their "wee" for a Wii. Personally if I knew that this could happen, I wouldn't do it expecially if I had three children.

I've heard of it happening before. Mostly from women athletes who drink too much water when they are running marathons or something like that, and end up passing out due to water toxicity.

Actually I did know about this, although I didn't know the name for it. When my mother was in her 60's, she went on a health kick and gave up coffee and tea (she never drank soda) and tried to drink a gallon of water a day. She only stood about 5'2" and weighed about 110, so it wasn't long before she ended up in the hospital with what we thought was a heart attack. Actually she had drunk so much water and upset the electrolytes in her system. This was only a few months after the same thing happened to Michael Jackson.

OMG a gallon of water a day? I'm about the same height and weight right now, due to a certain med I'm taking (which has caused me to lose weight). And because the med can cause kidney stones, I'm supposed to chug water. I don't think I could stomach that much, though. I have to pee too much as it is! That and I don't like drinking it unless I'm thirsty. LOL I am sorry about your mom, though. :( She did survive, right?
