When choosing a career do you have to chose what you like to do, or the one that's going to give you more money?

I will definitely say choose whatever you like to do . Career is something you will be doing daily (except weekends or holidays). It is really important if it is something you like or no. I doubt anyone will want to do something everyday that you hate to do. It is like attending school. When school is very boring or when you don't feel like going to school at all, your work performance will fall down. It can also get really annoying and stressing if you are forced to do something you don't like to do. Money can't buy true happiness. To be, a job that I really enjoy and makes me happy is way more important than material value.

I've actually been struggling with that recently with my applications to university. On the one side, I have something that I am really good at and could achieve success at, but on the other side, I have something that I am really good at and passionate about, but has a lesser chance of giving me great success. I applied for both things, so we'll see what happens from there. I'm still not sure right now what I want.

Well it depends on what you are more concerened about. If making money is the only priority then afcourse one will look for money which choosing a career. If person thinks about he should do something which doesnt looses his interest in between and can perform at his best irrespective of how much he money he makes then certainly he will go for what is actually like doing. If he does actually what he likes doing he will be at his best in performing that work and it will be certainly outstanding which if not fetch him more money but still can make his life comfortable enough.

of course it would be best if you can have both..but if i were to choose only one, i would be a hypocrite if i say i wouldnt choose the better-paying job.. just being practical cause it's really hard to find a job now that is financially rewarding..

It is best to find out what you really really like to do and figure out a way to get paid for it, and the money will come to you. Because if you have a position where you are well paid but you don't like the job the stress will far outweigh the money factor. You'll live an unhappy, miserable life. So, analyze your values, your interests, your abilities, and skills by taking an assessment test at a Career placement Center or you can read "What Color is Your Parachute" which has a yearly updated version and in the back of the book there is an Appendix that have questions that are fun to answer and the book itself is everything you need to know to find the career that's right for you. If you have the time to read it I recommend it, however, it's probably best to job search asap right when you finish schooling. Good luck.

I choose what I like and want to do. My mom wanted me to be a doctor, cause it makes more money. Every time she had a chance she would bring it up. It's really annoying. Now I don't really know for sure, did I choose this major because I wanted to or because she don't want me too. I lost that passion that I have years ago. It is very difficult when no one support you in your decision. And you will feel stressed and the result is bad grades. I don't know what I am saying anymore. Ideally you should choose a career that you feel passionate about, that you would love to do. Money shouldn't be the issue. But when you grow up poor, chances are you have to compromise and choose the most money career route. That wont be called a career no more, but simply a job. A job. A job. Another responsibility that you have to do. I wish I was a kid again.

I think it is a little bit of both. I believe that you have to enjoy what you are doing and be able to make time for things that are important to you. If all you want to do is work and become super successful, go into a field that is highly paid and work your butt off. I was like that for a little bit, but having two small children and realizing what I was missing out on killed me, and I could no longer do that to myself or my family.

When I look back over my life - I will say that it is better to go with what you like to do instead of going for the more money. Many people have the money, yet they are bored, unhappy, and unsatisfied in their life/work life. If you have a passion for something you should do that in life - you will be far happier and more fulfilled if you are doing something that you love. Remember, you will be working at least 5 days a week and you want it to be a job that makes you happy and gives an income.
