Do you get overwhelmed with fabric?

I went to a craft shop yesterday which was filled with fabrics of all sorts. Now I love fabric but after about 20 minutes of looking around I started to feel quite anxious because of the amount of choice. I ended up leaving there with some yummy fat eighths, but when I got home I could not make up my mind which quilt design to use - again too many choices and possibilities. So how to get to the next step? Does anyone else feel like this? what do you do about it?

I tend to go with specific ideas in mind. Often I go looking for a specific colour, or even specific fabric. When I go just window shopping, I tend to focus only in the remnants bin, since its not so overwhelming, and because remnants are generally marked down. I don't feel so bad about buying a half meter of something I don't really need.

OOHHH you are so disciplined LOL I just can't do it like that, although I do check the remnants without fail cos I'm making a hexagon scrap quilt as well as a diamond scrap quilt - bth handpieced.

I love all the new fabrics, but I just don't think I can do anything with them, I am not a machinist, I love all the fabrics with the glitter, there is some beautiful materials out there...

I also get extremly overwhelmed with the amount of fabric in these stores. I went into a fabric store a couple of weeks ago. I knew excatly what I wanted when I first went in but after looking around I got so confused. I just ended up purchasing one of the first fabrics that I layed my eyes on and probably paid way to much. I just don't have the patience to shop for anything.

Hahahahaha. I know what you mean. It sometimes helps to go with a specific project or at least color scheme in mind. Or you can just buy when it is on sale, so you have it handy when the mood strikes. As for choosing a pattern, either I have a speicific person in mind and that person's personality dictates the quilt design. Or, I have a list of patterns I would like to try. I try to see if the fabric I just bought fits a pattern on the list and I go from there. Or, you can just set aside until inspiration strikes. Have fun with it, don't make it a chore to choose. The more relaxed you are, the less overwhelming it becomes.

Yes I think the mistake I made was just to wander in with no project in mind and saw ALL the possibilities and panicked LOL

I live in the UK so when I go to a quilt store I don't get overwhelmed as they are much smaller than in NA and the fabric is at keast double the price that it is in the US. However, when in NA I feel spoilt for choice. The range and variety is incredible. To get over this I try and decide before I go what projects I want to get fabric for. For example I have lots of ideas for upcoming projects - so I decide to buy for them e.g. a food quilt, a New York quilt, an autumnal wall hanging, a sweetie jar quilt and a halloween quilt. I also collect cotton flannels to use on baby quilts. I find that by looking for certain things it stops the fabric overload in the store. I also find looking on ebay for specific fabric helps with my fabric urge when I can't get to the fabulous stores in the US.

Poppyscarlet - great name! really curious what is NA? I live in Australia and I am sure our stores aren't nearly as big as those in the US, but I still get anxious! LOL Thanks for your tips too.

Of course I should have thought of that, thank you! P&Q is enormous here - We have two extraordinarily good monthly magazines which I find better for designs and instructions than any other. They are Down Under Quilts http://www.duquilts.com.au and Australian Patchwork and Quilting http://www.apqmagazine.com.au. We are also lucky to have easier access to japanese fabrics, although their quilt magazines are TOOO expensive.

Sorry for using abbreviations - NA is North America - the US and Canada. AS my husbnd is from near the Canadian border of the US I try to include both when I am talking about both. Is patchwork nd quilting popular in Australia?

oh gosh... my grandma and mom have started giving me the fat quarters they don't know what to do with. They both have HUGE collections of fabric they have gained threw making clothes and quilts over the years. I'm not sure how to fix the overwhelmed feeling you get. Sometimes i can look at fabric and get an idea for it with now problems... other times i think i only bought them because they where pretty.

I find that it is easier for me if I go with a color in mind. Sticking to the color that I have selected previously makes it much easier. I love fabric. I would buy it all if I could afford it. There are just so many choices these days.

That's exactly how I feel but where to find the time to make all those quilts - sometimes I just sit and pat my fabrics:)

Im a little similar to you..I tend to buy the fabric and then think what im going to do with it!!! Sadly lol im no forward planner!! But after much thought I usually come up with a use for it! The choice is tremendous..and there are some beautiful patterns around.
