secret shoppers

I keep getting these emails about becoming a secret shopper. I think this would be fun and would love to do it, but all the websites seem to want money for you to join and then they only give you info. about what companies are hiring secret shoppers. Has anyone done this? Are there legitimate companies out there that actually hire secret shoppers? I would think that a legitimate site wouldn't make you pay for the info.
