I noticed growing up and in many other situations that people seem to be more concerned of what others think than what they think themselves. This makes no since to me why you would go through life doing what makes others happy instead of what makes your self happy? Any ideas of why this happens

I think when you are young, you listen to what others think and act on it with your own evaluation. When you are older, like me it is not so important. If you accept yourself as a unique person, with life experience and self confidence, you listen , but are happy with your own thoughts and do what you always do.

I think its because we humans are still social animals, we kind of have that natural instinct to just follow the pack and its leader. Thankfully 5 years in isolation has taught me that it aint bad not being part of the pack.
