Hi Friend ! I'm a new member of this community. I'm from India recently relocated to UK under Highly Skilled Migrant Program with Senior management level experience. In India I used to have a well paid settled job, but since I was not enjoying the same work pattern any more, so decided to migrate to UK for better future prospects. Now it's already been three months but I'm just unable to find a job for myself. Though I'm an optimistic person but still get confused at times by thinking that whether I took the right desicion!! Pls. share if you have any similar experience .... Thanks

You might have made the wrong decision. If it was in 2000, you might have been OK, but now..... In 2004, ten countries from eastern europe joined the EU, 70 million people, and they have the right to work in the UK. If you consider that unemployment in Poland is 16%, you can see why they are all coming over here. As a result there is huge competition for jobs, and unemployment in the UK has crept up from 4.5% to 5.5%. Before employing someone from outside the EU, the employer has to prove that he searched for an EU person but couldn't find anyone suitable. So someone from India will be at the back of the queue. And the EU has enlarged again this year (Bulgaria and Romania). A small country like the UK can't employ the whole world! Until countries like France and Germany reduce their own unemploymemt and are able to start employing some eastern europeans, and take the pressure off the UK, the outlook will be bleak for commonwealth people also seeking employment here. You might want to reassess and consider whether you would be better off in India (or look to countries like Australia, who are looking for skilled people and who do not have a huge queue of people trying to get in).

Way to go. I strongly agree with you. I think he should think of coming back home where he can find another job or even start his own business if he feels he has enough savings.

Hi, well i am sorry to hear you are having a hard time, i moved to the Uk form South africa on a working holiday and although I arrived in early february, i only managed to get work through an agency in August!!!! I think you should try using an employmen agency and for the moment don't be afraid to continue to look for work while you have something with the agency, also tell the agency what you want and keep calling and dropping by, they get annoyed and end up giving you work in the end! another thing you need to also be prepared to do it accepting a job that isn't exactly what you want, just so that you have something to do in the mean time. But be persistenat and you will end up getting the job you want. if you are not ready to bug the agency or do menial work or something that is not in your career path or plan then you may have made the wrong decision in coming here. Good luck, hope you have a job soon. cheers. let me know how it all ends up

I think you have decided to come to the UK just a little too late .. the UK job market is not very good ... inflation is now the highest it's been for 11 years .. council services are breaking down and housing prices are through the roof (no pun intended) .. More British people than ever are leaving the UK to go and live in other countries as the situation here is getting worse and worse ..

Not a problem .. let my try few more months .. else I will apply for Canada immigration .. or tell me which is the best country to go !!

I am not trying to 'get rid of you' or anything .. but I would have thought Canada would be a far better choice .. if you can stand the cold of course .. I might have suggested Australia a few years ago, but I believe they are now suffering with job shortages too .. I am sorry you are having so many problems in settling down ...

oh,I have not had the similar experience, but I do know it is not a easy issue to find a job outside of your own country. I think it just needs some time for you to adapt the life in UK, and also need some time for you find a job. Just try your best to seek the chances. There are always many difficuties in life, especially when you go to a new county. I am also facing many difficutis in my dissertation, and feel depresed when I can't solve the problem. and just like you,I often think about if I was wrong to decide to read for my Doctor degree. But now I always tell myself-- there is no difficulty which would always block me, and I would overcome it finnally. just take it easy, and make a plan to find a job. At the same time, you can come here, and post some discussions. I think some friends from UK may give you some good advices! Good luck to you!!

I move to Florida several years ago. I had a good job etc, and when I move to Florida I could not find work for 2 months. I eventually found temp work which led to a full time job. The job paid less than what I was making prior to moving so I had to work part time as a sales clerk. I felt like I made a step backward for months. I eventually got a better paying job and a decent apartment it took sometime, but I think it was a good move. You should give yourself more time, I am sure it will work out.

Hi frndzb4, its great news that you were able to move to the UK and particularly through this program. From what I know, the highly skilled program is a very difficult immigration program. Immigration to the UK, in gerneral, is very difficult. I am not one of the enthusiasts to immigration in general. However, it all depends on your circumstances and ambitions. But since you are already in the UK, then you have to fight for your career there and you have to fight for yourself. You will find a job sooner or later just be keen on looking for jobs and you'll get there. I guess this is not the right time to evaluate whether your decision is right or not. Now, its the time to stick to your decision and make it work for the sake of yourself. And if you do find work and settle down then its a great achievement in your life and career cause the UK is one of the best and most beautiful places to live in the world. So don't get disappointed and get your act together and do it. And if you need a friend to chat to about it, you'll always find me here. Good luck ;-)

Friend, sorry but for me, maybe it is much better for you to come back to your homeplace. It is not that i'm discouraging you to aim to work in UK but as far as i'm concerned, much better for you to come home for maybe its not yet as very late. You can still find job there in your home for it is so difficult for you to be alone there in UK without having any buddy whom you can rely then in times of needs. Much better at home for your family was there to be with you anytime you need them. Don't worry, you can still find a job. Remember, God is always there to guide you and He will never leave you...

Finding a job in India is not a problem for me .. I was working in the top level .. so I'm very much in demand there ... why I've migrated here ....coz.. my boss never wanted me to leave the job. Had I joined any other place in India .. he wudn't hv let me do that ..and being in the same trade .. I never wanted to face him .. representing any other company.... it was kind of a personal & professional relationship .. so I had no option than to migrate in a new country .. this was the only way to getting out of that old boring job...! So now at any cost ..I just can't afford to give up so easily .. I need yr good wishes to succeed soon.

There must have been a reason that the UK took you in as a Highly Skilled Migrant. Maybe the UK is in need of your particular skill, or else why did they even let you in if there was no need for your particular skill in their country. Keep at it, and be open to accepting a lesser position than what you are used to, just to get the UK work experience. Probably you will get the job you are qualified for, but not instantly. You're right, there is no use looking back and thinking negatively. For now, maybe even try getting a job in a related field---anything just to get a step in the door. Good Luck!

Friend, don't lose hope. I have not had such similar episode but somewhat similar episode in my friend's life. He did not migrate to other country but as soon as he finished his engineering, he started looking for jobs. He tried every nook and corner for a decent job suiting his qualification but to no avail. Likewise, around two years have been passed without any hope of getting job. We used to scold him to look for any job which is slightly below his qualification and try after that but he was so determined to find his dream job, he did not deter and still went for lots and lots of interviews. Finally, he got selected in one of the top companies in India and now he is in a top position there. Now, we used to look at him as an example for the determination and never give-up attitude to reach his goal. But you don't have to wait that much long, try again and again, you will suceed very soon.

i dnt know all the statistics like snowflake has given u.... but i cant say for sure if u made a mistake or not... in a way its mistake coz u ought to have left your job only after you have you got a job in UK.... but i also understand that its of no use living with a job that doesnt interest you!! tell you what? there is not need to feel desperate... you havent lost everything yet... are u prepared to swallow your pride a bit and see if you can try the type of job that uusually dnt do? i was talking about manual labour.. there are tmes like these that one has to forget about one's pride and go for any job one gets.... i believe ther are part-time jobs available in the UK... so whats stopping u from taking it? atleast u will be earning something, irrespective of how inconsequential the anount of money is! dont go asking othere if u made a mistake dear, whta matters is if you think that u made a mistake! if u think so, then do something about it good luck to you!! and have a nice life and if it comes to the worst, i suggest u go back to india

Transition from one place to another is not an easyjob. You have been in UK for only a few month, it's not too long a time for you to start thinking that you are already a failure. Give yourself more time and get use to European culture, take some refresher course(s) to reduce your thick ascent and do some coures relating to your field. It wouldn't be long before you find yourself where you wants to be. Cultural differences affects all immigrants in one way or other other. So, don't get discourage, give yourself enough room to get use to a different lifestyle
