Free software for updating iMac with OS 9.0 so msword attachments will open

Help please. We are presently using an iMac that requires plug-in applications which we don't have or can't locate on the drive and hence can't open attachments with rtf. and msword. We are presently using Windows 97-98 which doesn't seem compatible with anything else.
