There are a few things you can do to establich yourself as the alpha.*Never feed the dog while you are eating. You can put a food dish out once you and your family are finished at the table.*While eating have a designated spot where the dog must remain, his bed, his kennel, etc.*When leaving or entering a building. Tell the dog to sit and stay, you walk through the door and then call the dog through.*Take the dogs toys and food away without warning. If the dog shows aggression, you show more aggression. In other words if he growls, you growl back louder.
Ceasar Milan the Dog Whisperer is an expert at being alpha. You can find his show on National Geographic or buy his book or videos.

I have to say I agree with your first response. ceaser Milan AKA the Dog Whisperer is and awesom dog trainer. When we had cable I watched his show a few times and he amazed me what he could od with dogs of all sizes. Honestly you have got to get a few of his videos or books if he has any and read them. He will show you how you can become the "Alpha Dog" or as he calls it Pack leader of your home.

How old is the dog? Labs and big dogs will be like that untill age of 2, then they mellow out. Also a territory thing he was abused and he still feeling you letting know his domaain you just have to be patient and castraiting in all honesty doesnt help with obidence,
