Looking to set up a studio (not a professional one)

Looking to set up a studio. I plan on using a closet, a mixer, and a good microphone...thats all I need. Any suggestions as to a good mixer and a good microphone, that can deliver somewhat not so sh!tty sound? Something with phantom support and maybe a good alternative (if one exists) to adobe audition.
