Do we really need Laws?

This idea sprang up from another discussion I had, but it intrigued me enough to ask. Are laws really necessary for a society? or would people kind of form their own set of rules. i would say that laws don't seem to stop too many criminals, but maybe a closer knit society would.

Without law there would be anarchy. I think giving the law-making back to the people would build this close-knit society you speak of. Do away with electoral vote and have a real democracy. Yes, that means people would have to scoot away from MyLot and educate themselves on some issues once in a while, but too bad. It would be for the greater good.

I think that generally people are very good at self regulating themselves and then some laws just make an already complicated situation really hard and then people end up breaking laws. Criminals on the other hand have a totally different mind set, they will do the wrong things whether you have laws or you don't. If the laws are outdated they will find a loophole or otherwise plain break them. Another discussion I read was what do we need to get rid of to make the society better and it sort of ties in here. Greed!!!! Selfishness!!! So maybe if we could all take care of what we do there would be no need for laws.

To do away with laws would be great, but we would also have to do away with every weapon in the world. Not only that, it would take a few generations to make the country livable for the self regulating. So, it is way too late to abolish laws. Absolutely wonderful response, sumitvella. I have always thought that without greed, this world would be so different. This is supposed to be the richest country in the world with the most millionares and billionares, yet sometimes I have had to choose whether I want electricity or to eat. I also know that I am extremely lucky to live in a home that has electrical wiring and a kitchen. So many people do not have that. I am convinced, abuse and poverty breeds crime. The major influences are lack of education, environment, desperation, and of course, greed and selfishness. I am not envious of people that have more than they could ever spend in a lifetime. I do have a hard time understanding how those people, as humans, could knowingly ignore the problems of his own country without being selfish.

My opinion and on facts that I have read upon about the law is that it's not there anymore for us. The law is only there now to protect their organization. In other words, it's call the good ole boys club. You either in or your out. Police officers are only out there now to protect those that are in and not to serve citizens anymore. Now there are a few Police Officers that try to be honest and do their jobs but sooner or later they get setup or fired because they don't join them or keep their mouth shut about what goes on behind the scene. I think a close knit society would make better judgments then the way the Law has become. You just don't know what is going to happen to you even when your pulled over for a speeding ticket anymore.

Laws are very helpful in maintaining the direction of where we are going. it is like a guide that leads us to where we should be.

Yes I think they are necessary. Partly because it helps keep people in line. If there weren't laws against doing something s in this world, I'd probably go ahead and do them "for the greater good". But oh well.
