Speaking as an e-convict, I will say that it is hard for prison to rehabilitate anyone because most of the programs that used to exsist to help rehabilitate prisoners have been voted out by the people, or the govt. has slowly taken away. In Federal Prisons the staff even makes it hard for you to rehabilitate yourself. Such as destroying your school books. Withholding mail which often contains your course assignmentss. and much more. I could go on, but it takes a strong person to complete the fight to rehabilitate. Your prison staff is often corrupt and violate prison and state laws, and when you get past that, you have to get past the prison routine and more.

i bet it would greatly depend on the person's conviction to renew himself. prisons are just institutions that are intended to seclude criminals from the community at large in an effort to protect the latter. but you see putting all these criminals into one space creates a very harsh and hostile environment. some would learn the ways of others and some would fall victim to the more powerful criminals. i bet everyone in prison wished they never did the crime that placed them behind bars. this notion would perhaps deter them from being involved in crimes when they go out but we can never generalize though. others are just not deterred.

rehabilitate them? I doubt it. Break them? Most possibly. During our college years we had a team who went to one of our prisons to visit the inmates there and conduct an interview. We stayed there for 3 days, 3 nights and I tell you... if we were raring to leave that place after just 3 days imagine how the inmates are feeling. Some of them are not visited by their family members, loved ones or friends at all. Some of them have life sentence so there's no hope of getting out unless by a presidential pardon or a miracle in their case would happen. Inside the prison is a dangerous place, clan wars..etc. Either you'll die because of physical attacks, die because of insanity or die because of being broken down and having no hope of seeing life outside the prison cell.
