Is it hard to get an immigrant visa for the states?

I am hoping to apply for an immigrant visa for the US. I haven't started any processing done yet however I intend to apply for an immigrant visa. I was advised that it may tke too long so I would just opt to apply for a working visa and pply for immigrant when I get there.. Do you happen to hve any idea on this?
