If a word is misspelled in the dictionary, how would we ever know?

We wouldn’t, after all America has been misspelling “colour” and other words with a similar use of “U” for many years and look how that’s ended up! :P

You're right you know but there's always another dictionary. Nowadays, and maybe always there's plenty who can't spell. Just look who writes for myLot, where's their ever ready dictionary?.
