spaces where planks meet.

I have larger cracks than I think look good in my prepainted hardie plank. Should these have been caulked. The contracto,told me they could not caulk the spaces because they are too close together. I am not happy becuse the spaces are not even consistant in width. I saw a job where they were usiing caulking but this was a wall that was not prepainted. The workers there told me all cracks should be caulked regardless of weher or not the plank was prepainted. What is the true story here? Cheers, Daivid
