How many bugs are living in your bed?

I saw on an Oprah show the other day that there are millions of dust mites living in our mattresses, pillows, carpet and pretty much anything thing else cloth in our homes such as draperies, couches and chairs. I did know this before I saw the show but had never actually seen what they look like under a microscope. Those things have pinchers...HELP!!! They had an expert on their and he said we should be changing our bed linens no less than once a week (which I normally do) and vacuuming our mattresses (which I don't do but I do have mattress pads). We should vacuum no less than once a week carpets, draperies, couches, chairs etc. We should change out our pillows at least once a year and have a pillow cover to keep the mites from getting to us (same for your mattress). My son says I will never have dust mites in my carpet because I shampoo it at least once a week because of the dogs and grandchildren so guess I will be alright there. These things live of the skin cells that we shed every day and night so guess you could say I am depriving them of some food, but after seeing them I want them absolutely destroyed. They say that is not possible so guess I will just try not to think about it when I lay my head down at night and take all of the precautions that I can. Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite!

Our local news has that story run periodically....they also recommend that you don't make the bed either, because the mites like the dark. But vacuum the mattress? The couches? The drapes? We'll never get to sleep! I personally wouldn't worry about the drapes (just washing them periodically would be enough, like my mom did each season; she also had the mattress pads that she would wash each week). You can also toss your pillows in the dryer for a few minutes, so that the heat will kill the mites (and fluff them up a bit!). I agree with vacuuming the couch and chairs--between pets (if allowed on the furniture) and grandchildren, I can see the need. You can absolutely destroy them...but then you couldn't live in your home, enjoy your dogs or hug your grandchildren because they wouldn't be there (and you'd be in a bubble!)

Thanks for the extra info. I will certainly do all of these things. Guess I will learn to live with some of them since I want to keep my dogs and hug my grandchildren!lol
