American Idol Making Fun of People..and I'm not talking about Simon

Tonight American Idol made me kind of sick. I'm used to Simon making fun of people. That's Simon. They choose to go in the room and they know what he is capable of. People expect that crap out of him. However, I don't think they would expect for the entire TV show to make fun of them. Tonight they said on the show "Will day two in Seattle be any better?" and then they showed pictures of 3-4 people who weren't very attractive. Then Ryan said "Hell no" That is the show making fun of people...it has gone past Simon at this point. I don't think it is funny or fair.

I agree with you. I have to say though I really thought Simon crossed the line too though now. Do you remember the guy that Simon told he looked like a monkey??? It's one thing to make fun of the person's performance, but I think it is really rude to start making fun of people's looks. I was starting to feel sorry for some of the people.

I can not believe Simon said that dude looked like a Bush Baby. I almost fell out of my chair. Plus, they played that kid singing for so long, I thought I was going to go deaf.

Well, that's pretty much what reality TV is all about. Making fun of people and embarrassing people on national television. I've felt that American Idol has always been cruel with people - Randy's never been that nice, he's just nice compared to Simon. That's the show, it's just keeping in the normal trend of Reality TV. Not saying I agree with it, just that I'm not surprised.

I think making fun of people has gone a bit too far. I don't mind when it is about someone's voice or how someone acts--face it some of them were plain goofy or even how they dress. But when they are making fun of looks??

I thought it was messed up last night also. Picking on how someone looks is not right. Yes, if they do it on purpose to look weird, well then they are asking for it. But to pick on physical features is pretty cruel

This show making fun of people is nothing new. If people go and audition they should expect some kind of criticism. That's what TV does... and honestly, if they can't handle American Idol laughing at them, they won't make it in the music business. The people need to be able to handle a lot of rejection.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! Is it just me or was Jewel a bit too snobbish and high and mighty as well?! And I seriously didn't like the way Randy treated the other contestants. The pilot show was more about making fun of the "losers" and "weirdos" and not much of highlighting the initial batch of talented hopefuls! The pilot show was so depressing!

I think Jewel said some disparaging remarks. But notice, when Jewel was there, Paula barely said a word.

Hehehe perhaps Paula felt uncomfortable? Especially because it's the pilot season and she's not the only female in the panel

Personally, I thought the exact opposite of Jewel. I thought she was trying NOT to hurt people's feelings so she wasn't as open as the others when some of the people had no singing voice. That might have made her look snobby, but I think she actually felt sorry for some of those people and was trying not to hurt their feelings, which the other three really didn't have a problem doing.

I agree, but I also think most people who try out for this show, should be prepared for anything and everything. This show has never been about niceness...why would it start now. But you're right when you say it's not funny or fair.

The View is on right now and they were discussing the whole situation as well. The thing that stuck out in their minds was also the guy he called the bush baby. I'm suddenly getting really angry about this when last night I was just annoyed.

I agree with you! they showed some really mean things. And the thing that made me the most angry was when simon told that one boy that he looked like one of the creatures from out of thr jungle, THAT WAS MEAN!

Humiliation TV, thats all I have to say about this show. They also have a swedish verison of this and they are sooo rude as well. they have told people straight up that they are too ugly, to fat, to skinny and so on.. Actually one boy was on, he had a great voice but he was overweight. They said - well you might have moved on if u were less big... he cried and made a statement right there - I will be back next year... and he was - about 100 punds lighter... He advanced this year although he didnĀ“t win..b ut today he has a record deal =)

I agree. I think it has just gotten rediculous. They just let those people on there to make fun of them. Some of them are really hurt by it too (or they are really good actors). I feel sorry for them. But, you know they have seen the show before, they have to know what they are getting into.

I don't think they have them on there just to make fun of them. They have them on there because it makes good television. What I don't get is how they decide who goes in to see the fiersome threesome because not everyone does. They can't listen to hundreds of thousands of auditions.

Wel..I mean they are in the music industry. The show is called American Idol. Meaning that in some aspect you have to emulate an IDOL! Some of the people I saw last night like really deserved to be told something. If all you are is a shower singer, dont expect to come on national television to make you debut, and then be serious about it.!! The business is cruel and if you dont have the total package, then you are not cut out for it..No for those that were just nervous but could actually sing, yes,I feel bad for them. But those who KNOW they dont have the look, or cant hold a note to save thier life should not try out in the first place.

yes, that show is crap i think. anyone who tries out is putting themselves out there for being ripped a new butt hole. I think they try and find the worst possible contestant, just so that they can be rude, and embarrass them. Shows like that have no value to me. And I don't even give it a chance anymore.

I agree with you. As I watched last night I saw it too. They are making these people the joke. It's like mean people in high school. What's disturbing is these are grown adults. Children watching will get the impression that it's okay to treat people that way and that concerns me. They add insult to injury by their unwarranted behavior. Since when is treating people poorly funny and okay? I certainly wouldn't want my children treating anyone that way.

You make a very valid point here. My daughter is very guilty of saying to me, "Look, Mom. Look at this person! Doesn't he/she... " and makes some ridiculous comment. I have to tell her to stop criticizing every person she sees. I know she doesn't get it from me so it must be television.

yeah i saw that too. people cant help what they look like, so i dont think it should be mentioned unless they are dressing a silly way on purpose or something. but to make fun of a persons features is mean. they arent perfect.

yeah, I think last night was a little over the top. What would these people expect though? You make yourself a target by appearing on a show like that.

If they don't want to be made fun of then they ahould go on there. People know what they are getting into by going there. Also I would be willing to bet you're making fun of them at home. It may not be the same person or for the same reasons but everyone does it. Some of the people that go on there are just asking for it.

Simon Cowell is a jerk and has been from the start. I don't have a t.v. that gets anything this year so I haven't watched it. As far as someone like Simon telling somebody else they look like a monkey, has he taken a good look in the mirror? He isn't butt-ugly but he is no Prince Charming or Handsome Prince. I am not good looking and I know it. But at least I try to be nice to people most of the time.

I agree with you that it is wrong for the show to speak of the people of Seattle as a whole. You do have to admit though that those 2 days of auditions in Seattle were almost 80% full of people that were "less then normal", to put it nicely. That's not to say that there aren't people like that everywhere. I wouldn't take it too personally though....they just want to make the show fun for people to watch.

I agree. They made fun of several different people. One that sticks out in my mind is the short guy that Simon said looked like a creature with those massive eyes. He can't help what he looks like. I felt sorry for him. I just thought that was very rude even for Simon.

I think the show is funny-- I'm sure people sign waivers to be on the show-- and they must watch the show so they know how Simon is. I do agree that Randy is getting worse this year-- but it's all in good fun. I missed the incident with Ryan. I always thought Ryan was pretty nice- He was the one who consoled or patrionized the people after Simon got done with him. You have to admit there were some pretty weird acting people on last night- but you find them in all cities not just Seattle. Can't wait for NYC-- wow that one will be a hoot! Tennessee next.

I agree completely. It has become very cruel this season and seems to be focusing more on how people look rather than focusing on the singing auditions. $ hours and they have barely shown the people who have gone through. I'll be honest, in previous seasons I have enjoyed the bad singers, it's funny, but they are definitely slanting it more towards the looks and are almost treating these people like they are inhuman.
