Beauty pageants -- do we really need them?

When i was a child, ms universe pageant was one of the must-see shows i know.Everyone in school would be talking about the winners the next day. But as i grow up, i also outgrew the habit of following the ms universe pageants. Right now,there is the ms world,ms international, ms teen usa, ms earth, and other beauty pageants. When i think of it now, i think beauty contests are unnecessary and sometimes misleading. Are these contests a good way to measure a girl's looks and smarts? Do girls who participate in these contests really want the money or the fame or just the recognition that they are beautiful?
