how do we say "be a better person"?

How one starts “becoming” a better person really? I imagine, doing good deeds and hanging around with “good people” is something but I don’t think that’s enough. Sometimes good is to be funny, sometimes good is to be angry. Maybe being a better person is about feeling better with yourself – knowing yourself or maybe it’s more about thinking what you can give and not what you can take. So, please, give some ideas: what one can do to become a better person?

A few things that I can think of right now: - If you see someone that needs help, help them, rather than just walking on. For me, that means I need to be more observant; sometimes it is easy to miss opportunities to help people. - For me, I think I need to open myself up to the world around me; it is easy to get caught up in my own problems or circumstances and not recognize the needs of others. I suppose this is fairly similar to the first one I mentioned. Anyway, these are just a few thoughts I’ve had.
