What's hanging over your fireplace?

I have absolutely nothing hanging over my fireplace at the moment. I don't know whether to hang a painting or maybe a clock, or buy a plasma tv to hang over it. My husband is dead set against putting a mirror over it as he says it's a dangerous idea. Someone might go to admire themselves and lean in too close to the fire. So, what have you got hanging over the fireplace?

At the moment I have a small picture. I should have a large overmantle mirror, but since I moved into my new house last year, the mirror has been lying behind my sofa. This probaly relates to your last post. I need to everything myself, but the mirror is too darn heavy. However, now that you have reminded me...

Thank you BittyBiddy. Your ideas are always so funny and helpful. I will try putting it in front of the tv, but knowing my husband, he will just say, "By the way, I put that mirror behind the sofa as it was blocking the tv screen".

Now, if I had something big like that that I wanted hung up, I might place it in front of the tv or the fridge where someone is bound to come across it and have to hang it up. Either that or you could pounce on the first DIY type visitor that calls to your house.

We don't have a fireplace in this house. In the old apartment, we just set fancier things on the mantle. The wall behind it was all brick and was fancy enough on its own. My inlaws have a gas fireplace. It is more for looks and if the electricity goes out, they have the living room which will still be heated by the fireplace. They do have an antique mirror hanging over it. But they also have no reason to lean over into the fire because it isn't heated by wood. They use the remote to turn it on and off and it has a blower to blow the air out.

Some of those gas fires are beautiful. There's a woman down the road from me has one and it's fantastic. Just one touch of a button and she has a roaring fire, whereas we have to come in and burn coal or turf or logs.

We have pictures of the kids hanging over the fireplace. I love being able to use that space for displaying wonderful photograhs of my sweet babies.

Another vote for the photos. I'm thinking it's a nice idea as people's eyes are naturally drawn to the fireplace which is the centrepice of the room.

We have a very large painting of a stream with running water. You can plug it in and actually hear the water and it lights up. It's interesting to see amd hear.

Oh that sounds GORGEOUS! I love the sound of running water. I'd love one of those little fountains in my sitting room, one that has pebbles and water and things in it. They're lovely.

I've never lived anywhere with a fireplace, but if I had one, I would probable hang framed photos over it.

I didn't think of hanging a clock over the fireplace. And there would still be room for photos too if that's what I did.

Yes, we have a mantal and I have a few antique fans on top of it. Actually, maybe I should get a big frame and put the fans into it. Now, there's an idea.

We have a gas fireplace that has built-in book shelves to the ceiling on either side. In between is a mirror. Because the mantle is so high, and the gas fireplace sticks out, no one actually uses the mirror to look at themselves, unless they back up to the other side of the room. A nice painting would be ideal if you can afford one big enough.

I'd love to have book shelfs beside my fireplace. I have hundreds of books and nowhere to put them.

3 photos in frames. The one in the middle is 8x10, on the sides are 4x6s. My son's picture is in the middle. On the left is my husband and son on Halloween and on the right is me and my son at the pumpkin patch. We also have 2 candles on the corners of the mantle.

Oh, that sounds lovely. I thought at one stage I might hang a large photo of our wedding day up, but what you've described sounds much nicer.

I don't like anything over fireplaces, I have a sculpture on my fire place which is quite high so there's no room for anything else, Thankfully as my Partner wanted a mirror (must be an Irish thing, mirrors over fire places?)

Maybe it is an Irish thing. Most of the houses I've been into here have had a mirror over the fireplace. One of my grannies had a wooden panelled surround on her fireplace and she had different brass ornaments and carved faces hanging around it. One of the faces used to scare me. Maybe she put it there on purpose to keep small kids away from the fire.

Hanging a plasma tv over fire place is a good idea and it is too dangerous too cause it is a bit costly material to keep it their and so u can hang the painting over there so that it ll look good and music system beside u so that hearing to the music and taking the heat from the fire place ll b the good idea.

our fireplace is not real. it`s an electric one. I have a big painting hanging above it of a beach scene. actually I like the idea of hanging a mirror above it. I think it would look nice.

Wow, I never thought about that with the mirror idea. Our fireplace really isn't working, anyway, so that wouldn't matter. We have a mantle over our fireplace that is filled with extra hard drives (I know, lol, we have like four just for this computer alone because we just keep filling them up, and the computer is right next to the mantle *laugh*) and there are also some old books up there. Above that is a landscape painting that looks very old. It has a road and some treet with a small fence and two people walking towrads a house. It's a nice painting, but I have no idea where my family got it. We've probably had some of our old paintings since when their parents lived here before we did.

Well, at the moment I don't have one. I live in a apartment, but before we downsized we had a loveley house with a big fireplace and I had a Picture of a church hanging over it, a mantel clock, 2 candle sticks and 2 pictures of our family. I loved the set up, and no noone every got burned looking at it. I would change it up a little each season, but the fundamentls were there. Ahh, I miss that house, I think I am going to pull out those pictures and take a gander in to memory lane.

A nice watercolor of a country home hangs over our fireplace, which isn't used all that often. Prior to that we had a black and white poster of a couple kissing outside a hotel in Paris. I can't imagine that too many people would be so enamored with their own reflection that they would toast themselves to get a closer look. I'd be more concerned about ambient heat and possible damage to any electronics.

We are about to hang 2 pieces of 8 ft tin above our fireplace then hang a canvas on top of that. Leave about 7 inches or so on each side of tin to see the wall.

It depends on how your fireplace is set up. If you have converted your wood burning fireplace from an open hearth to an enclosed system that keeps heat in in winter (as opposed to up and out the flue), then its safe to put any thing over the fireplace. Doug http://wood-burning-fireplace-inserts.com
