Will fear allow us to be racist?

I was on my way home that afternoon and rode a commuter bus. After reaching a certain terminal, a group of moslem brothers hopped in and took the back seats which stir some hush reactions from the other passengers. Audibly, some were jesting our lives are at risk with possible terrorists onboard. How could they be so mean? After 9/11, muslims around the world ahve experienced racial discrimination in one way or the other. The hasty generalization of them being terrorists has never been that visible since that fateful September days in New York. Does fear allow us to be racists? I don't think it is generally fair. Terrorists abound everywhere. It may not be characterize by suicide bombings but sow fear as well, putting our lives at daily risks. Druglords, rapists, kidnappers, corrupt politicians, organized crime syndicates endanger our lives more, the core of our being as peace loving individuals.

Hi there - I think you are right to point out that it is wrong to work on the basis of assumptions based on people's appearance. People should be allowed to follow whatever religion they wish as well as dress the way they want. But I don't know if I would call what you describe as a RACIST occurence, assuming everyone was of the same nationality and ethnic group etc. It sounded like a bit of bullying, thats all! Not everybody likes Muslims as a group but it is wrong to make biased comments in their presence. People everywhere are quite frightened of Muslims due to the actions of some Muslims in bombing places etc as well as the beliefs of Muslims regarding the position of women.
