The reason was that he never tried to get away from his kidnapper in the four years he was held "prisoner". He had complete access to the Internet a cell phone, rode his bike freely around why do you think he never called for help or tried to escape. Do you think he was perhaps brainwashed or do you have any other explanation?

I agree that this is a very strange case, and we have not even begun to hear all of it yet. We may NEVER get the whole story as we are not directly involved with this family. Stockholm Syndrome is a real possibility as the boy was only 11 when he was kidnapped. This man had plenty of time to convince the boy that there was nothing for him to return to with his family. In another report, there was some discussion of the kidnapper possbily being involved in a kidnapping 16 years ago of another boy. Same vicinity, same situation of totally vanishing. What bothers me is that if he did kidnap that other boy, did the other boy get "too old" for his perverted tastes so he killed him and kidnapped Shawn? As Shawn is now 15, was Ben meant to be HIS replacement, therefore making it necessary to kill Shawn? I think we havent even scratched the surface with this one.

I heard that too about the bot 16yrs ago. I never thought that Ben could be "recruited" as a replacement you made a very interesting point.

It was probably some sort of a Stockholm Sydrom thing where he identified with his captor. He was just a terriffied kid. If it happens to adults who are taken captive, I'm sure it happens to children too. I guess the big question is How much harm has been done to the child and was it done at such a young age that it is irreversible?

That is a possibility. I noticed he had his ear and eyebrow pierced so it seems as if he was not kept as a hungry, raggedy prisoner.

I think he found kidnapper place better, more amusing, loving and secured from the place where he lived for which he did not try to escape despite he got scope. If brain washed then kidnapper could prisoned him more years.

I heard that the parents were on Oprah recently saying that the lad was held captive and could not escape. I believe there is going to be a bombshell coming from this story that will show the lad had no reason to TRY to escape. The parents are not going to come out of this smelling like roses and the lad will tell why he chose to stay.

I dont personally think he was brainwashed. I think there was some other reason on why he might not have left. The suggestions left by the others before me are very good. There are many reasons why the boy might have decided to stay with his kidnapper. Maybe it was a planned thing. Its very possible that he was threatened. Even if the boy says in court why he stayed. We'll never really know if that is the truth. Or he could maybe leave something out. I dont know, thats just my opinion.

Shawn will eventually come out and say what all happened. He said that he was terrified an that is why he didn't try to get away. Eventually everything will come out in the open.

I don't know. In a way it makes me wonder what kind of home was he living in before the "Kidnapping". Are they sure it was against his will and not maybe planned? Then again, they say brain washing is a very powerful thing. Maybe there was a fear put into him so he decided to just go with it, since was being kept alive and well it seems.

I am guessing brainwashed for no other logical explanation. I know if I would have been in that same situation, I would be gone in a second. The fact that he had free access to a ton of things might hurt a case for a severe charge against the kidnapper. I am sure he will get a good sentence for his latest kidnapping, but the other one will be harder to prove, I believe, due to the fact that the child had freedom to leave and call for help but never really did. I really don't know why he would stay around, other then your possible solution of brainwashing.
