Medicines for cold and increased doasage. Do they work?

I suffer from cold very often.Initially a pill or two for cold was always sufficient. But lately i realized that over time i kept increasing the dosage and now i use three times to that i was using initially to get rid of cold.I never liked using medicines in excess, so i finally gave up aking pills. But i have to put up with cold days together and it is really annoying. Do you know of remedies other than pills? Did these medicines work for you in the same way always?
