what did the guy from Grey's anatomy do?

I turned on the news this morning and saw he was apologizing for something and hoped to get back in his fellow cast members' good graces.

Yeah but what was the context of that comment? Was he trying to say something hurtful out of anger or did he just think it was an okay term to use? The whole thing seems really blown out of proportion to me but then I really missed the whole story too and don't understand why he called that guy that.
